A Special Collections gallery is now available in Health Information @ Himmelfarb, the library’s catalog and discovery service.  You can now browse through special collections contents or search easily within a collection.

To access, click the Special Collections option from the top Health Information @ Himmelfarb menu as shown below.

The following collections and resource lists are currently available:

Note that some collection items may not appear in the gallery due to current quarantine restrictions. 

To search within a collection, use the Search inside the collection button at the top of the resource list.  You can also change the default sort using the Sort Items button.

To see availability and location of collection items, open the full record and check the Get It area.

Many collections include electronic content. Healthy Living collection books and the Humanities and Health collection are located in the alcove on the first floor. Equipment and the Historical Collections are kept behind the first floor Circulation Desk.

If you use Himmelfarb Library’s search tool, you will retrieve only items that are accessible via online access. This is by design as a relatively small number of Himmelfarb affiliates currently have onsite access to the library.  To support all of our users in finding materials quickly, we changed the default search to Online Access which connects to articles, books, and databases that can be accessed online from on- and off-campus locations.

If you would like to change your search, simply click on the down arrow on the right side of the search field and select from among the choices listed. To include both print and online holdings,  select the facet: Articles + Himmelfarb Catalog.  For those who prefer a more focused search, search either of the facets Articles or Himmelfarb Catalog to retrieve both print and online holdings.

If you are looking for materials from Gelman or the consortium libraries, choose the facet: Articles + GW & Consortium Catalog.  While Himmelfarb users can check materials out of Gelman Library, the WRLC Library Service which provides a borrowing and delivery service from other DC area academic libraries is currently unavailable.

If you are accessing us remotely, you may be able to request an article to be scanned and sent as a PDF, using our Documents2Go service. If you have any questions in regards to this service, please email mlbdoc@gwu.edu.

As Himmelfarb Library begins the transition into Our New Normal, you may have questions about where to access certain services and resources we provide. Here’s a guide on what you’ll find available online and in-person.

Online

All of our e-journals, e-databases, and e-books remain available online. We also provide our Documents2Go service entirely online, where you can request articles unavailable in our collection.

We offer instructions on downloading and installing our mobile apps to your device.

There is a host of information available on our Research Guides, everything from question banks to anatomy images, and much more!

Himmelfarb’s Reference team is also available online. Our chat service is monitored by reference staff 8:30AM-8PM EST Monday through Thursday and 8:30AM-5PM EST Friday. Have a question a little too involved for chat? We can also schedule individual meetings with a reference librarian via WebEx. Email us at himmelfarb@gwu.edu to start the process!

In-Person

In addition to our print collection available in our book stacks, you can also find our multimedia collection, audiovisual collection, and software resources on the third floor, in the Bloedorn Technology Center.

Our special collections, the Humanities & Health collection, Historical collection, and Healthy Living collection, are all accessible in-person.

Some of our older journals are kept in on-site storage as bound volumes. You can request a specific volume for perusal by following the instructions on our Borrowing and Requesting page.

Anatomy models are available in various places throughout the library. Our skeletal models and bone boxes are up on the third floor. Heart and brain models can be checked out at the Circulation desk.

After Himmelfarb Library closed its physical space, we made changes to Health Information @ Himmelfarb to make searching for electronic content easier.  The default search mode was switched from Articles + Himmelfarb Catalog to Online Access.  The online access search limits items retrieved to those available full-text online. This includes article, book chapter, and e-book content, as well as some streaming media.

Searchers can still search physical content by switching the search mode to any of the “catalog” options:

Requesting holds on books and Consortium Loan request options are turned off until Himmelfarb and other Washington Research Library Consortium libraries reopen. Library users can continue to request items that can be sent digitally through our Documents2Go service.

Have you ever wanted to keep filters you applied in a search active throughout a search session, or easily remove all of them? Now you can! A new enhancement allows setting and keeping multiple filters active with “Remember all filters” or removing all with “Reset filters”. These options become available at the top of the left column menu whenever filters are applied.

Have you noticed the new microphone icon in the search bar of Health Information @ Himmelfarb?

The microphone appears on most search pages; clicking the microphone enables a voice search feature.

Now speak your search terms and Health Information @ Himmelfarb will display your terms and retrieve matches. A red button in the open window tab indicates the microphone is active and listening. If no audio is detected, the system will prompt for input twice before exiting voice mode.

At this time voice search is only available on Chrome desktop, Android, and Samsung browsers. It will roll out for other browsers as they support Web Speech API.

Health Information @ Himmelfarb has also launched several changes for mobile device searching. 

There is a new funnel icon for Refine Results functions (circled in red above).  When you click the funnel icon for Refine Results all of the options display and multiple can be selected at once.

 

 

When you open an item in results, all of the Send to options are now displayed in a block together, as shown to left.

 

 

The ellipsis icon (circled in red below) now leads to Library Account, Advanced search, and other search options. 

You can also access Sign In here for requesting options, including Consortium Loan Service and Documents2Go.

Did you know that you can borrow books from Georgetown, Howard, and other DC university libraries and have them delivered to you at Himmelfarb? 

What is it? To put it simply, the WRLC is an agreement between libraries in the Washington D.C area that allows us to share materials between other libraries within the vicinity. Thanks to the WRLC courier system, we generally receive books within 2-4 business days from the time that the request was made, (if materials are available at the requested library) and more often than not, Consortium Loan Service (CLS) books come with a generous check out period. This option is a great way to save some money and time compared to common hassles of standard shipping.

If you would like to place a Consortium Loan Service (CLS) request, make sure to follow these steps:

  1. Use the Health Information @ Himmelfarb search box on Himmelfarb's homepage to locate a book.  Remember to switch the search to Articles + GW and Consortium Libraries.
  2. Sign in using your GW NetID and password, then click on Consortium Loan Service Request (2-3 Day Delivery) under "How to get it".
  3. Select George Washington University Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, or select a different location, if preferred.  When your book arrives, you will be notified via email to come and pick up your request.

As always, if you are looking for a medical article, monograph, or if the book you are looking for isn't available via the Consortium, feel free to check out our Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Document Delivery Services.   Himmelfarb users can also make requests through Documents2Go by using their GW NetID  and password to log in.

Health Information @ Himmelfarb, the search box on Himmelfarb Library’s home page, has new features for managing results and setting filters to limit results to specific disciplines.  On the brief results page, searchers can now opt to save the top 50 results and send to email, RefWorks, or add the whole group to Favorites. Click the box at the top of the results list to select the items on the page and the option to choose the top 50 results will appear.

Users can also activate the Personalize button at the top of brief results to limit results to a particular set of disciplines.  Clicking the button takes searchers to a list of disciplines to choose:

Once disciplines are set, searchers have the option to boost newer materials with the Prefer newer material button that appears in Refine Results options to the left.  Searchers can also de-select the disciplines if desired to expand the search.

Health Information @ Himmelfarb has recently been configured to boost the most current five years of content in results.

Himmelfarb Library Artist Rendered Model

Himmelfarb Library announces the launch of a new digital collection in June 2017 in the Health Sciences Research Commons, the Historical Collection. The focus of the collection is the people, places, and events that make up the evolution of the George Washington University School of Medicine.

Items in the collection include, but are not limited to, photographs, newsletters, publications, and newspapers.  Some highlights include a telegram sent to a newly-accepted medical student, course catalogs from the 19th century, and images of buildings from the Columbian College, the predecessor of today’s George Washington University.

You can now search for print books on course reserves in Health Information @ Himmelfarb.

Input the instructor name, course number or course name in the Health Information @ Himmelfarb search box.  Matching print reserves will display in a box at the top of search results.  You can click on the title to display the record in the Library Catalog to see if the item is available.

Course reserves can also be searched directly in the Library Catalog.

droidrepairThe Himmelfarb Library Catalog will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 from 10am-noon.  Online catalog account services including self-renewal will also be unavailable and circulation desk staff may not be able to place holds on materials or take fine payments during downtime.

For assistance locating library materials on the 13th, please contact the Himmelfarb Library Reference Desk at 202-994-2850.  Electronic resources will be accessible using the e-Journals and e-Books links from the library web page.  Users can also continue to search catalog records in Health Information @ Himmelfarb during downtime but will not see current location and status information for print items.
