The Library Search Box, also known as Health Information @ Himmelfarb, searches the library’s physical and electronic collections simultaneously. It can also search the holdings of GW’s Gelman Library and Jacob Burns Law Library, and all the libraries in the Washington Research Library Consortium! Here are some tips for getting the most out of your search experience.

Refine Your Results

Health Information @ Himmelfarb searches millions of records and searches frequently return very large results sets. The service uses relevancy ranking to bring the best content to the top of results. You can use Refine Results to further narrow the results group to the best matches for your search. Refine options are listed on the left side of the results page.

You can refine by date, content type, subject or availability. Under Availability there are filters for open access and peer reviewed content.

Conversely, you can widen your search to include items outside of Himmelfarb’s collections by using the Expand My Results option at the top of Refine Results.

The Search Box Can Fetch!

Want to quickly retrieve an item with just one or a few pieces of information?  Use the Find Item Citation Linker. Select Find Item from the top menu, select your item type (Article, Book or Journal) and input as many pieces of information as you know. If you have a PMID, DOI, or ISBN, that’s all you need.

 Use Shortcuts to Full-text

Records for journal articles in the results list frequently include links to Download PDF or View Issue Contents.

These links use the LibKey service to provide shortcuts directly to full-text or to view the full journal issue in Browzine. To learn about other Browzine features, check our Research Guide. LibKey offers a browser extension called Nomad to get to full text faster in PubMed, CINAHL Complete, and Scopus. See this article for more on how to download and use Nomad.

Search and Request Items from Other Libraries

Use the drop down menu next to the magnifying glass on the search box to change the content from just Himmelfarb resources to content from the Washington Research Library Consortium. This will include content from the other GW libraries.

Once you find your item, you can request it from another library in the consortium by signing in with your GW User ID.

Then select the Consortium Loan Service Request.

Your email and the book data should automatically populate the form. Select your pickup library (Himmelfarb or Virginia Science and Technology Campus Library) and indicate if there is a date you no longer need the item after. You will receive an email notice when the item is available for pickup.

Check the Health Information @ Himmelfarb FAQ for more tips and instructions on searching, requesting items, and managing your results.

The staff at Himmelfarb Library are committed to providing the academic and research support you need throughout your time at George Washington University. This post provides information on downloadable applications and features that will help you stay organized, maintain focus while studying or help you take high quality notes. If there’s a study app or feature you’d like to highlight, let us know in the comments!

Box- Box is an online storage management system that protects your documents and allows you to access them through the Box website or app. Save your lecture notes, essays or research notes on the platform and download them onto a new device, such as your phone or tablet, at any time. Box also allows for collaboration. Simply share the file or folder link with a colleague and assign them editing privileges. Any changes made to a file will be automatically saved to your Box drive, so you never have to worry that you may lose information. Your GWU user ID grants you access to Box and many of its features including Box for Office Online and Box for Google Workspace. Let Box help you stay organized this academic year.

Focus Mode for Smart Devices- It can be difficult concentrating on an assignment or studying for a test when your phone, laptop or tablet is sending constant alerts for new messages or app notifications. The focus mode is an integrated feature for many current smart devices and is easy to activate. When this mode is in use, it will automatically silence unwanted phone calls, text messages, app notifications or other distracting alerts. During set up, you can allow notifications from certain apps or listings in your contacts so you can receive emergency notifications from friends or relatives. Depending on your device, you can create a schedule so your phone will automatically enter and exit focus mode during certain times. If you’d like to develop a consistent sleeping schedule, then many devices include a Sleep Mode that works similar to the Focus Mode. For Android users, this feature is located in the ‘Digital Wellbeing and Parental Controls’ section under your settings. For Apple users, this feature is located in the ‘Focus’ section under your settings.

Note taking Apps- There are an assortment of note taking apps available for smart devices. One of the most popular note taking apps for the iPad is GoodNotes 5 which allows you to take unique and detailed notes, mark up PDF files and store your notes in one location for later reference. The app is free to download, though after your first three notebooks you will need to pay a one time fee of $7.99. Another popular note taking app is Notability which includes many of the same features as GoodNotes. Notability is free to download, but you must pay a fee to access all of the features and tools. CollaNote is a free note taking app that is regularly updated by the developers and offers a similar experience as both GoodNotes and Notability.

Himmelfarb Library would like to officially welcome the incoming MS1 class to George Washington University!

As part of your orientation, here is your quest:

Get into a group of four,

Pick a member of your group to lead the tour,

Visit all four floors of Himmelfarb if you dare,

Take photos of each accomplishment to prove you were there.

Complete each task in the order you choose,

You’ll finish them all if you follow the clues.

Task #1

You’ll be learning informatics with a librarian by your side.

Find the name and business card of the one who’ll be your guide.

Have your group leader take a photo with the posted first-floor image of the librarian specified.

(If you weren’t assigned a librarian, take a selfie with the image of George Washington.)

Task #2

Follow the clue (and call number) to find the book listed below in the basement book stacks and have one of your team members take a picture of the front cover. When you’re done, leave the book there for later groups to find.

“If ye climb to the crow’s nest and feel a gout in yer knee,

Hochberg and his mateys wrote a book ye should see.”

RC927.R48215 2015

Task #3

Himmelfarb Library’s third floor is a mix of quiet space, rooms for collaborative studying as well as software, instructional DVDs/CDs, and anatomical models/kits.

Though we might be pirates, we're no luddites.

(We're also no poets, as you may have noticed.)

As new crew members, we'll show you our finest new tech.

A merry band awaits you in the Levine Lounge

to show you our BodyViz 3D anatomy system

and how to 3D print a parrot.

We'll even swab the MedicalHoloDeck

to show you a skull and crossbones in Vee Arrrrrrr.

Task #4

Log into any computer and you’re on your way.

“Use your UserID and password,” is what we say.

https://guides.himmelfarb.gwu.edu/md is where to go.

Search for ‘Pneumonia’; don’t be slow!

Go to chapter 126 in Harrison’s Principles (it’s a great book).

Take a picture of the screen so we can take a look.

Task #5

Study in a group or study alone.

Study standing, seated, or study prone.

If you study in a room on floor two,

An online reservation will ensure the room belongs to you.

Of the thirty-four study rooms in all,

One is the finest, a real windfall.

The quiet floor, a roomy table, and seats.

Plus windows on the two walls make this room complete.

Find this legendary room of library lore,

Take a selfie with the librarian at the door.

Final Task

Post your photos to social media (Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter) as proof of your quest,

Show us your group is the best!

Post your pictures in the comments,

So your team represents;

Or post to your own social media pages pictures of all four stages:

Use #Farbientation22 to make sure we see your post.

A group drawn at random will win some great swag!

If social media just isn’t your style,

Email (himmelfarb@gwu.edu) us instead your image files.

Be sure to include the names of your group mates,

And your entry into our raffle awaits!

One member of your group should post/share photo(s) of the group at each task. Use #farbientation22, if posting to social media.

If you prefer not to use social media platforms, email your pics to himmelfarb@gwu.edu

The Library will select one group, at random, from the social media and email entrants to win the prize.
