artofcareThrough careful examination and discussion of original works of art at the National Gallery of Art, healthcare professionals and caregivers will practice and hone skills that support visual literacy, communication, and empathy. Working independently and in small groups in the galleries, participants will engage in exercises that explore the nuance and depth of meaning in works of art. Participants will also reflect on how they can apply these skills to their work to enhance relationships with care recipients, members of medical teams, and colleagues.

The program was co-developed and is run in partnership between the National Gallery of Art and the Georgetown Lombardi Arts and Humanities Program.

Participants are asked to commit to the four workshop dates if possible. Registering for the first date guarantees enrollment in all four meetings. Please only register if you can attend all four sessions.

As we roll into September and DC starts to cool down a bit, it's the perfect time to try something new.  Take a study break with Himmelfarb Library's DC Events calendar and try something different!

This month's calendar can definitely show you something different in DC and includes:

  • Sunday Savasana Yoga featuring a different teacher and a different flow each week.
  • The DC State Fair, H Street Festival, Festival Fiesta DC, and the Turkish Festival can introduce you to different aspects of DC, different cultures, and different neighborhoods.
  • The Reach Opening Festival can introduce you to a new way to experience art: with you at the center of the action.

accessmed3d
AccessMedicine has launched a series of focused 3D modules designed to guide medical and health sciences students through systems-based tours of human anatomy.  The modules are designed with an eye toward learning anatomy via an interactive, visual, and systems-based methodology.
This new 3D series currently includes 7 modules: brain, endocrine system, gastrointestinal system, heart, respiratory system, spine, and urinary system.  Additional 3D modules will be made available in this collection throughout the coming year.
AccessMedicine users can also access complete human anatomy modules.   The complete human modules allow for visualization of male and female human bodies in an interactive, 3D format.
AccessMedicine is available to all GW users from both on-and off-campus locations.  If you have questions about this resource or about online access, please contact Laura Abate (leabate@gwu.edu).

DynaMed

DynaMed has been redesigned!  DynaMed (formerly DynaMed Plus) debuted a sleek new interface this morning.  The new interface provides ongoing access to DynaMed's collection of clinically-focused, evidence-based, routinely updated articles, images, and clinical calculators.

DynaMed's updated interface allows users to search by article or topic and also provides users the ability to browse articles by specialty by accessing the drop down 'Specialties' menu or click on the tiled images on the DynaMed homepage.
The updated interface also provides users the ability to create (or continue) a personal DynaMed account to access additional features including:

  • Following specific articles.  Users can also specify their 'follow' preferences: practice-changing updates only, all updates, or no email/just display on DynaMed.
  • Earn credits via DynaMed including Maintenance of Certification, AMA, AAFP, and AANP credits.
DynaMed's mobile app will be updated on August 26 and additional information will be available at that time.  To learn more about the updated DynaMed interface, please email Laura Abate (leabate@gwu.edu) or view one of the video tutorials:

If you need assistance uninstalling the legacy version of Cisco Anyconnect VPN software or updating to the newest version, please contact the GW IT Support Center at 202-994-4948 or via email at ithelp@gwu.edu for further assistance.

genetherapyWhat's the state of the art for gene therapy?  It can be challenging to remain abreast of this fast-moving field but a recent review article in the New England Journal of Medicine can help update your knowledge.  In Gene Therapy, Dr. Katherine High and Dr. Maria Roncarolo describe the basic principles of in vivo and ex vivo gene therapy as well as specific therapies in use and in development.  The article also includes an interactive infographic to support learning and teaching as well as an interview with Dr. High.

Explore additional genetics articles by searching Himmelfarb Library‘s PubMed which provides direct links to articles in our online collections or Health Information @ Himmelfarb to locate e-books, print books, and other materials with information on genetics.

To learn more about these issues and other genetics topics, participate in the SMHS’s online Genetics Journal Club.
