USA News & World Report provides an interesting report take on popular diets by aggregating analysis by a panel of health experts with patient input regarding use and success of each diet.  Best Diets uses consistent criteria to evaluate and rank diets: "To be top-rated, a diet had to be relatively easy to follow, nutritious, safe, and effective for weight loss and against diabetes and heart disease."

This report includes 'best of' lists for best overall diets, best weight loss diets, best diabetes diets, best heart-healthy diets, etc.  For each diet reviewed, you can read a text overview of the diet as well as view a snapshot with scores showing short- and long-term weight-loss, ease, nutrition, safety, etc.  Additional information provided for each diet includes recipes, menus and nutritional information, reviews, and do's and don'ts.

High-protein and low-carbohydrate diets have been popular among patients and in widely discussed in the popular press for the last few years.  Numerous studies have looked at different aspects of these diets including their safety and effect on other aspects of health.
The following two systematic reviews examined the efficacy of these diets to try to determine if they worked and the durability of weight loss.

Reports on the most highly cited journal articles published by GW faculty in 2011 are now available on the Himmelfarb Library's Faculty Publications webpage .

There are three reports, one each for the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, School of Public Health and Health Services, and School of Nursing. The reports were compiled by taking the titles of papers published in 2011 from the faculty publications database and entering the titles in Scopus on 9/7/12 and sorting the results by citation count. The faculty publications database is a compilation of citations to journal articles, books, book chapters, reports, and audiovisual materials published by both full and part time faculty in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, School of Public Health and Health Services, and School of Nursing. Citations are identified from periodic searches of the library databases: MEDLINE, Scopus, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Global Health, SPORTDiscus, and Health Policy Reference Center, using a combination of zip code and name of institution in the address fields. Citations from books were forwarded from the library's acquisitions department.

Himmelfarb Library is pleased to announce that more online resources are now optimized for use on mobile devices.  Health Information @ Himmelarb, CINAHL with Full-Text, Health Policy Reference Center, and SportDISCUS with Full-Text are now designed to automatically detect Smartphones and tablet computers and provide a search interface designed for mobile devices.  Apple iPads will continue to access the complete desktop version of these resources.

The updated mobile interface is tailor-made for the smaller screens of mobile devices and provides the most important search and retrieval features and functionality right in the palm of your hand.  Mobile device users now have access to the same user-friendly and easy-to-use search experience that is available online.

For more information, please access our guide to Mobile/Handheld Resources or ask us!
