Beginning May 18, 2015, a number of projects to improve the environment within Himmelfarb Library will begin. Work will continue until August 7, 2015. The improvements include a complete overhaul of the heating/cooling system and the refurbishment of the second floor small group study rooms.

What does this mean for students?

  • The Himmelfarb Library will remain open throughout this period. 24/7 hours will continue until June 30, 2015. During the month of July 2015, the Library will be on summer hours: 7:30 am until midnight daily. Starting August 1, 2015, the Library will resume its 24/7 hours. There will be chillers and fans placed throughout the Library to help keep temperatures regulated.
  • If you find that the Library is too warm, alternate quiet study space has been reserved for you in Gelman Library (H St. between 22nd & 23rd). Gelman's summer hours will be posted at http://library.gwu.edu/hours#holidays.
  • There may be some construction noise on the second floor during the day only. Again you may want to study at Gelman. Earplugs will be available at Himmelfarb's 1st Floor Circulation Desk.

Please remember that these renovations should make the Himmelfarb Library a more comfortable place to study. Should you have any questions, please contact the Office of Facilities Management at 202-994-5755.

TurnstileWe are very pleased to announce that Himmelfarb Library is installing an entirely new turnstile system beginning Friday, April 17!  Not only is it stylish, it will actually work!  You should expect noise on the first floor and a modified entrance to the Library beginning on Thursday. The new turnstile system will be fully operational on Monday, April 20.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, please join us in the Library lobby on Tuesday, April 21, at 3:30 PM for a ribbon cutting ceremony and stay for cake and beverages.

Lumbar SpineHimmelfarb Library offers several pieces of equipment to make your life in the library more comfortable.  This equipment is available from the Circulation Desk on the first floor - just ask!

  • Kneeling chair - this chair which was designed to relieve low back strain by preserving the natural lumbar curvature.
  • Exercise balls - exercise balls may improve your core strength when used in place of a chair.
  • Music stands - music stands allow you to study while standing.

If there are other types of equipment that you think should be available at Himmelfarb Library, please let us know by contacting himmelfarb@gwu.edu or 202-994-2850.

The Library has heard your suggestions and we are working hard to enhance the visual photo1appeal of the facility.  One thing we want to do is add some visual interest by painting some of the accent walls - but we need your help in choosing a color!  Please visit the third floor, where four color choices are currently displayed, and then rank your choices in our survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/NR56N2N.  The survey will close Thursday, October 16 at 5 PM.
