The moving van has left, and Ross Hall’s 3rd floor IT Department is settling into its new location in Himmelfarb Library’s Bloedorn Technology Center (BTC). Computer Application and Support Services (CASS) is now The SMHS Technology Support Center, but they offer the same range of technology services and assistance as before.

Directions, please!

Do you need IT staff to take a look at your laptop or iPad, but don’t know exactly where to find the Help Desk? You may ask for directions at Himmelfarb’s first floor Circulation Desk. Or you can follow these instructions:

  • Take the elevator or courtyard-side stairwell to the 3rd floor.
  • If the door to the right of the 3rd floor stairwell/elevator is open,
    • Walk through it and then turn left when you reach the wall.
    • The IT Help Desk will be straight ahead of you in the adjoining room.
  • If that door is closed,
    • Walk along the wall of portraits just beyond the 3rd floor stairwell door and then make a right.
    • You’ll see a glass door entrance to the BTC ahead on the right.
    • Enter there and walk straight ahead until you see the IT Help Desk on your left.

Other ways to get IT support:

In addition to an in-person consultation, you may email casshelp@gwu.edu, or you may reach the Help Desk by phone at (202) 994-9400.

Himmelfarb Library has recently updated its access protocol to allow more of our users to visit us in person, as long as they comply with new entry policy requirements. Graduate students in all SMHS/GWSPH/SON programs may now come onsite. All faculty and staff in these schools have library access, as do GW Hospital and MFA employees.

Before planning your next visit, please note the following safety requirements:

Current Library hours are available on our website. For additional information, please visit Himmelfarb Library’s access page. If you have questions, contact the Himmelfarb Access Coordinator, Catherine Sluder, at crharris@gwu.edu.

Many of you may have hefty fines and even replacement fees for items you borrowed before we closed the building for COVID-19. Regardless of the circumstance, or of what you owe, take advantage of fine and fee amnesty for the entire month of May, 2021.

Return your items to the 1st floor Circulation Desk at Himmelfarb and we will check the items in and then waive your bill. Even items that have been declared lost may be returned without penalty. If you have any questions, please contact a Circulation Manager at 202-994-2962. We will be happy to assist you.

First-year medical students: we invite you to take your study of renal, GI, and liver anatomy to the third dimension!

BodyViz software, now available at Himmelfarb Library, combines digitized MRIs and CT scans to create 3D renderings of human anatomy. Enhance your learning experience during the CPR and GI/Liver blocks by exploring 360° anatomical views of kidney, gastrointestinal, and liver tissue.

Where and How?

The workstation is located at the Bloedorn Technology Center, on the third floor of the library. To use BodyViz, reserve the workstation online, and then check out the BodyViz accessories kit at the Circulation Desk on your way to the third floor.(We even include a game controller that allows you to rotate, pan, and zoom effortlessly!

Program Features

Not sure what you are looking at? Annotation mode displays labels that identify and explain anatomical structures. Want to examine deeper layers? Clipping mode allows you to peel away tissue. Want to enhance the visual display of an organ? Turn on active coloring.

For more information

To learn more about the program, visit Himmelfarb’s BodyViz Resource Guide. Here, we offer a Quick Start Guide for new users, along with information on how to reserve and access the workstation. Need assistance navigating the program? Schedule an in-person consultation with our staff.

BodyViz 3D Anatomy workstation is ready for you to use at Himmelfarb’s Bloedorn Technology Center. This interactive program uses digitized CT scans and MRIs to render 360° anatomical views in astonishing detail. In the absence of onsite anatomy labs this semester, please note that you can perform in BodyViz a virtual dissection of the human body.  The BodyViz workstation comes with a game controller, which provides superior image manipulation to a traditional mouse.

Due to social distancing restrictions, only two concurrent users at a time may use the program. You will need to reserve a time slot in advance using our online reservation form. In the interest of minimizing travel to and from campus, Himmelfarb Library has automatically extended the due date for all circulating books that were due on or after 11/30/2020. The new due date is 1/11/2020. If you require a longer extension, please contact the Circulation Desk at 202-994-2962 or at mlbcir@gwu.edu.

If you have equipment, such as a laptop, headset with microphone, or digital camcorder, that is due back this month, the due date has not changed. Please contact Catherine Sluder at 202-994-9453 or at crharris@gwu.edu should you require a loan extension.

If you have borrowed books via the Consortium Loan Service (CLS), the due date has not changed, either.  Please arrange to return items that are currently due at your earliest convenience. Books borrowed just before the library closed in the Spring 2020 semester had due dates extended to 10/31/2020 and will not be extended further.

All books, including CLS loans, can be returned to Himmelfarb library in person (in the library or via Courtyard return) or can be shipped via USPS, UPS, or FedEx; we recommend USPS and that you insure the shipment.  Please ship to this address:

Developmental and pathological views are also included in the software’s library. Students can “dissect, study, and visualize the human body from head to toe, just as they would in the cadaver lab."
