Sakura Matsuri – Japanese Street Festival

The Sakura Matsuri, a Japanese street festival is the largest celebration of Japanese culture in the United States. The festival features over 24 hours of Japanese cultural performances on four stages (including J-Pop, traditional Japanese music, and martial arts) and a diverse range of cultural exhibitors, artisan and commercial vendors of traditional and contemporary Japanese goods. Japanese and other food and beverages will be available. The festival also spotlights travel and tourism opportunities and innovative Japanese technologies.

Georgetown French Market

The annual Georgetown French Market is a popular open-air market originally inspired by the outdoor markets in France that has become a tradition in DC, and one of the biggest shopping events of the year for local small businesses. More than 35 local boutiques, antique stores, restaurants, salons and galleries display their discounted wares for up to 75% off. Neighborhood restaurants also offer food and drink specials, sale on French wines, pastries, croissants, and macarons from French bakery Patisserie Poupon. On Saturday and Sunday, the French Market will feature live music, a balloon artist, roaming stilt-walkers, a unicyclist, pop-up flowers, book sales, and more.

FONA's Flowering 5K is the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of spring. This run or walk will take you past garden collections brightly colored with spring flowers, over tree-lined rolling hills, and along streams winding their way to the Anacostia River.  Enjoy cherry blossoms, magnolias, and so much more! This race will be safe and secure with all roads closed to cars so you can safely enjoy running or walking through this 451-acre urban green space. There will be a professional race announcer calling out runners as they cross the finish line and music before and after the event to get you in the groove. A professional photographer will take photos along the course. Photos will be shared with all participants after the race for free!

Blossom Kite Festival

DC Chinese Lunar New Year Parade

DC Chinatown celebrates the Year of the Dragon! In the lunar calendar, it will be the year 4721! The streets of DC Chinatown will fill with revelers and parade spectators in celebration of the Year of the Dragon. The dynamic community-based parade will include a range of cultural and community performers. The finale will feature a firecracker show in the middle of H Street. Come early for a bite to eat at one of the many nearby eateries and restaurants and then grab your curb-side vantage point to witness the colorful pageantry!

The Washington Harbour skating rink is the largest outdoor rink in DC, larger than the Rockefeller Center in New York City! Participate in a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his birthday. National parks will waive entrance fees for everyone on Monday, January 15, 2024, as the first fee-free day to honor his life and legacy. Places where he made history and of the greater Civil Rights Movement he influenced are preserved in many national parks and local communities. It’s also a day of service when thousands of volunteers participate in service projects across the country, including at national parks. Walk the DC Peace Trail (Self-guided walking tour)

Georgetown Glow – Free Light Art Experience

Set against the historic backdrop of DC’s oldest neighborhood, Georgetown GLOW is the region’s only free curated outdoor public light art experience. The popular holiday celebration will feature national and international artists and their commissioned works, on display at outdoor locations throughout Georgetown. In addition to the light art installations, GLOW programming will include more than 30 walking tours, a special shopping night, and much more!

District's Holiday Boat Parade

Downtown Holiday Market

In the Spirit of Kwanzaa: Every Girl Has a Story

Celebrate Kwanzaa and the Black experience through the eyes of the young women of Coyaba Dance Theater. Along with Coyaba’s signature live drumming and dance, various stories will be told that honor and highlight the Seven Principles of the Nquzo Saba: Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba, and Imani. In the Spirit of Kwanzaa is a holiday festival of heritage and Black culture filled with love, excitement, and tradition.

2023 Annual Hanukkah Party

Join the Annual Hanukkah Party for latkes, jelly doughnuts, gelt and song! Explore the museum while you eat, play games and sing. Learn about the ways Jews in the American military have continued the tradition of the Maccabees. Tour the museum at 6:00 before the party begins at 6:30. Bring your own Hanukkah menorah for a group lighting. They will also be collecting winter clothing to benefit homeless veterans. This event is co-sponsored by Jewish Study Center

The Peace and Carol Ringers

Under the direction of Tamara Freeman, the Peace and Carol Ringers will perform Songs of the Season. The program will include a variety of sacred and secular music performed on seven octaves of handbells, chimes, and an assortment of other percussion instruments.

Celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights at the National Museums of Asian Art. This is an after-hours event where they light up the museum in celebration of light overcoming darkness. Every item provides unique insight into the risky business of innovation. Let's face it, the majority of innovation projects fail at some point. But that's okay because embracing failure and taking meaningful risks paves the way for real innovation and progress. After all, as Confucius once said: "our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fail."

Sandwich Saturdays - Feeding Homeless Veterans

Volunteer to help homeless veterans this fall and winter. Join USASOA to make and distribute sandwiches on Saturday mornings as a part of their HOMELESS AND ELDERLY VETERANS OUTREACH PROGRAM for veterans living on the streets and in transitional housing units. During the winter months, they will also make soup along with sandwiches. USASOA also provides nonperishable food items, toiletries, and clothing to the DC Department of Veterans Affairs Homeless Shelter and Resource Center and the US Vets Transitional Housing unit.

Washington, D.C.’s beloved Smithsonian’s National Zoo holiday tradition is back and brighter than ever! Now in its 15th year, ZooLights will take thousands of visitors into a winter wonderland lit by more than half a million environmentally friendly LED lights and illuminations. Visitors can stroll through immersive lantern displays showing rainforest, grassland, desert, ocean, and polar habitats and the animals that call them home. Live musical performances, delicious treat offerings, and plenty of opportunities for holiday shopping make this special event a dazzling and immersive experience for families and nature aficionados.
