I’m delighted to announce that the GW Study Term Abroad Program and Psychological and Brain Sciences along with Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies will be offering for the second year our spring 2024 course: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in Mexico and Latin America. The class will meet Wednesday evenings during the spring semester and features travel over spring break to Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta Mexico.

Course Description
The course examines sexual orientation and gender identity with special attention paid to the Latin American experience of same-sex sexuality and gender diversity. We explore social science research related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) identities, as well as non-LGBTQ identified same-sex sexuality in both the U.S. and in Latin America. Informed by the cultural contexts of Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta, and enhanced through academic readings, cultural excursions and community engagement, this course will explore unique challenges and triumphs of individuals and groups navigating the diverse and multiple LGBTQ identities that co-exist within contemporary Mexican urban society.
Students will explore topics such as queer identity development, transgender issues, sexual politics, race/ethnicity/skin color, queer Latinas, queer life in Latine families, mental health & discrimination, and HIV-AIDS & Covid-19. We will immerse ourselves in the convergence of Mexican and American LGBTQ Communities in Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta. Previous knowledge of Spanish is useful but not required. The course is available for graduate credit with an extra writing assignment required.
