About the Regional Math/Science Center

The FSU Regional Math/Science Center is a federally funded Department of Education Upward Bound program designed to help low-income, potential first generation college students achieve their goals of attaining college degrees, specifically in the fields of math and science. Participants in the program attend a multi-week summer session on the campus of FSU where they are engaged in a scientific research project. The RMSC strives to develop exciting hands-on projects that are relevant to modern life.

While working on these projects the practical use of the scientific method is emphasized. Students must develop testable hypotheses, help design the study, collect the data needed, analyze the data, draw conclusions based on the data collected and finally present their study in both oral and written form. Students learn about peer review as they present their study progress each week to the other students in the program. They also learn to use the computer for data analysis, for data processing their formal report, and for developing a power point presentation that is presented to a panel of scientists and an audience of parents, university and public officials.
While at FSU students also participate in a variety of activities designed to promote strong study skills and positive social behaviors, as well as activities that provide recreational and cultural experiences.

FSU Is An AA/EOE. Appropriate Auxiliary Aids & Services For Qualified Individuals W/Disability Will Be Provided Upon Request. Please Notify In Advance. WWW.FROSTBURG.EDU

The Computation and Cognitive Development Lab (CCDL), run by Dr. Julian Jara-Ettinger, studies the cognitive building blocks of our ability to make sense of and navigate the social and physical world. Previous and current research in the lab has examined topics such as children’s understanding of fairness, luck, and knowledge. More information about our research can be found at http://www.compdevlab.com

We are seeking undergraduate interns to participate first hand in our research studies. Summer interns will have the chance to take part in all aspects of the research process, and will help recruit and test participants ages three to eight, learn to design and run studies, and code and analyze results. In addition, interns will have the chance to attend lab meetings, participate in reading groups, and join graduate students, interns, and other researchers in the Yale psychology department for social activities including bowling, trivia nights, and dinners.

Interns will work 30-40 hours per week. This internship is best suited for students interested in or studying developmental or cognitive psychology, or cognitive sciences. Students are encouraged to apply for funding from their home institution, but internal funding is available on a need basis. The internship will run from early June through the end of July.

If you are interested in applying, please fill out the application form found here, and submit the application, a CV/Resumé, and a copy of your transcript (unofficial is fine) as a PDF with subject line “[YOUR LAST NAME] CCDL Internship 2018" to madison.flowers@yale.edu. Additionally, please have one letter of recommendation sent directly from the recommender to the lab manager at madison.flowers@yale.edu. We will begin reviewing applications in mid to late-February, with all applications and materials due by March 1st.

Research Assistant Volunteer - National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Section on Growth and Obesity (Chief of Section: Jack Yanovski, MD, PhD)

The Section on Growth and Obesity at the National Institutes of Health is seeking 2 highly motivated undergraduate students to assist with two of our studies: The Children’s Growth and Behavior Study (CGB) and the Mobile Attention Retraining in Overweight Female Adolescents (AR).  The CGB study examines how eating behaviors contribute to weight gain and associated health conditions among children and adolescents.  This is a longitudinal study involving observations of eating behaviors, psychiatric and sleep assessments, and cognitive evaluations, among others. The AR study seeks to understand the relationship between eating patterns and the brain’s reactions to different images of food. The purpose is to see if a 2-week smartphone program can help retrain teenage girls’ attention biases away from unhealthy foods towards healthier food. The study involves an MRI scan, several magnetoencephalography scans (MEG), interviews to assess eating behavior, and laboratory test meals.

Responsibilities for both visits include participant recruitment, data collection and entry, and administrative and clerical responsibilities. In addition, highly motivated individuals in this position will have the opportunity to assist with patient visits. This competitive and highly regarded position is ideal for students considering careers in public health, psychology, or medicine. The successful applicant will have a solid academic record and will be extremely detailed-oriented and responsible.

The position would require at least 15 hours per week of dedicated time in the lab, and applicants must be able to commit to a full year (beginning in July 2018 and continuing through the academic semesters to July 2019). If interested, please send a CV or resume and application to Research Coordinator, Manuela Jaramillo (manuela.jaramillo@nih.gov). Please contact Dr. Jaramillo to request the application form.
