Summer Internship in Practice Communications at the American Psychological Association

The Practice Communications department at the American Psychological Association seeks an intern for the summer of 2018. Start/end dates are flexible.

This internship is for academic credit only. The intern must be receiving academic credit in order to do the internship.

Qualifications
The Practice Communications intern is an undergraduate or graduate student who is a strong writer with professional interest in communications, journalism, and/or psychology. Experience or interest in media production and/or research preferred.

About Practice Communications
The Practice Communications department disseminates information to psychologists and the public about the practice of psychology. The department produces online and print news and other resources for psychologists on practice issues such as health care and mental health advocacy efforts, electronic health records, diagnostic codes, and licensure issues, such as interstate and telehealth practices. Through the APA Psychology Help Center, Public Education Campaign, the Disaster Resource Network, and media outreach, the department also communicates the benefit of psychology to the public.

Responsibilities and Expectations

The intern will:
 Assist Practice Communications staff with production of the monthly podcast “Progress Notes.” This may include brainstorming, research, light technical assistance and publicity. Interns who are especially skilled may have the opportunity to independently produce a segment or a whole episode.
 Research, proofread and possibly publicize articles on a variety of topics relevant to practicing psychologists nationally and on the state level.
 Assist with the development of consumer resources related to APA clinical practice guidelines. This may involve research, interviewing experts, and writing website content.
Depending on the intern’s skills and interests, other projects could include designing and implementing a research project about trends in perceptions of psychotherapy; helping develop and execute social media strategies; and other short-term research or writing projects.
The intern would gain knowledge about the workings of a member and public communications department in a large, national, non-profit association, learn about two national volunteer networks that share helpful psychology information with the public, and find out about the latest issues and developments for practicing psychologists.
