Research/Internship Recruitment Session for C&O Canal National Historic Park

Date/Time: Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2018 - 1:30pm - 3:00pm

Description: This is a presentation aimed at GW students. Come join our team as we explore the past and piece together information on one of the nation's most intact 19th century transportation networks. The issues you will work are relevant to modern transportation, planning, and legal questions that we grapple with today. Students will gain skills in research methodology, data analysis, source verification, and public history. While much is known about the canal, there is yet so much to learn! Need a class paper, thesis, or dissertation topic? We challenge you to tackle one of our research topics, or come up with your own!

The goal of the Cross-Disciplinary Research Fund (CDRF) is to establish collaborative research partnerships within Centers and Institutes or between researchers from two or more diverse departments that encourage applications to external funding opportunities.

Deadlines:

  • Statements of intent (SOI) due via InfoReady: Friday, November 30, 2018 by 5:00 PM
  • Full proposals due via InfoReady: Thursday, January 31, 2019 by 5:00 PM

NSF MRI (NSF 18-513) Award: An MRI proposal may request up to $4,000,000 for either acquisition or development of a research instrument.

Deadline for internal competition at OVPR: Monday, December 10, 2018 @ 5:00PM
Deadline for full proposal at NSF: Monday, January 22, 2019 @ 5:00PM

This internal competition applies to all GW investigators submitting an NSF MRI proposal whether as prime, consortium, or subawardee. Details for the competition are on InfoReady.

GWSPH Genomics Core Mini Grant Program- Cosponsored by Illumina

Deadline: December 3, 2018

Description: GW’s Genomics Core is offering a unique opportunity for innovative investigators to support pilot research projects using Next-Generation Sequencing technology on the Illumina NextSeq platform. We are pleased to announce a pilot award in collaboration with Illumina to provide sequencing for multiple applications. The support covers sample library preparation and sequencing on a NextSeq flow cell (up to 400 million reads) for 1 winner.

Objective: The goal of this program is to support GW researchers as they seek to generate pilot data to submit in support of future grant applications, and to promote the utilization of cutting-edge next-generation sequencing technology for genomic and translational research.

Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR): Data Science Corps

Deadline: Monday, February 4, 2019

Description: In 2016, the National Science Foundation (NSF) unveiled a set of “Big Ideas,” 10 bold, long-term research and process ideas that identify areas for future investment at the frontiers of science and engineering. NSF’s Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR) Big Idea is a visionary, national-scale activity to enable new modes of data-driven discovery, allowing fundamentally new questions to be asked and answered in science and engineering frontiers, generating new knowledge and understanding, and accelerating discovery and innovation. The HDR Big Idea will establish theoretical, technical, and ethical data science frameworks, and apply them to practical problems in science and engineering, and in society more generally. The Data Science Corps is one of the components of the HDR ecosystem, focusing on building capacity for harnessing the data revolution at the local, state, national, and international levels to help unleash the power of data in the service of science and society.

As a first step in establishing the Data Science Corps, this solicitation focuses specifically on enabling participation by undergraduate students in the Data Science Corps, by supporting student stipends for participation in data science projects and supporting integration of real-world data science projects into classroom instruction.

NCI Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award

Deadline to OVPR: Friday, January 4, 2019
Description: The purpose of the award is to encourage and retain outstanding graduate students recognized by their institutions for their high potential and strong interest in pursuing careers as independent cancer researchers. Interested applicants should submit documents to InfoReady by 5:00PM on Friday, January 4, 2019. OVPR will communicate the decision on Friday, January 11, 2019.

NCI F99/K00 Nomination Package (single PDF, not to exceed 3 pages, exclusive of CV/Resume) should include:

  • Document Header: Program Title/Fellow Name/School
  • Doctoral Dissertation and Research Experience: Provide a brief description of how the combination of past research experiences and the F99/K00 plans contribute to achieving the long‐term career goal.
  • Activities Planned Under This Award: Briefly describe the scientific and professional development activities planned for each phase and explain how these activities will facilitate the transition to each subsequent career stage. Please also notice that: 

  • Information on UFF / CCFF is not available yet. We are in touch with OVPR on their updated UFF announcement. As soon as they finalize that, we will update our CCFF guideline accordingly. After that, we will share with you through our CCAS Research Update and CCFF website on the CCAS ResearchBlog page
  • Decisions for Enhanced Travel and Dean's Res Chair awards are moved earlier to April 2019.  This is to help you to plan ahead and is based on the recommendation of our CCAS Research Advisory Council. Please submit your proposals by the deadline so we can move things as planned.

It includes a link to the Research Ecosystem Review webform. Please feel welcome to enter your input, which we will share with the working groups.

Earlier this week, you should have received a message from the Res Integrity and Compliance working group, along with a Review of Research Integrity / Compliance processes in CCAS  by me. This review is based on your input as of Oct 15. If you have additional comments on Res Integrity and Compliance, please email to the committee chair Dr. Kimberly Acquaviva at  acqua@gwu.edu. or enter on our webform (which we will then forward).

As of today, we have received 46 responses on our webform. Some of you decided to email me or talk to me in person, and that is perfectly fine as well. In a separate effort, our SRA team also designed a CCAS Pre-Award Survey which we sent to those who submitted proposals recently. We have received 37 responses for that. We are very much encouraged by your engagements on this university wide effort. We see this as a great opportunity to further enhance our research support infrastructure at CCAS and GW. It there is an interest, CCAS could consider a roundtable event to discuss the feedback and hear your thoughts directly.

This presentation will give an overview of the history of the Fulbright Scholar Program, take a deep dive into the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program opportunities (including learning how to navigate the Catalog of Awards and how to apply), and conclude with a brief overview of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar opportunities.

IIE has been a world leader in international education working to build more peaceful and equitable societies by advancing scholarship, building economies and promoting access to opportunity.

The Fulbright Program, the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government, is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The Fulbright Program offers grants to study, teach and conduct research for U.S. citizens to go abroad and for non-U.S. citizens to come to the United States.
