Ethical Dilemmas in the Global Defense Industry

On on September 14, 2023, the GW Law Government Procurement Law Program and Defense Industry Initiative (DII), in kind cooperation with the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law, held a free, half-day event to celebrate the publication of a new Oxford University Press (OUP) book, Ethical Dilemmas in the Global Defense Industry.

NETWORKING BREAKFAST

The event will be hosted at GW Law and will begin at 9:00 am ET with networking breakfast in the law school’s Kelly Lounge at 2000 H St, NW.

OPENING REMARKS

The program will begin at 10:00 am ET, in the law school’s Jacob Burns Moot Court Room with opening remarks from GW Law’s Senior Associate Dean, Steve Schooner (co-author of a chapter in the Ethical Dilemmas book), and Penn Law’s Professor Claire Finkelstein (host of the 2015 conference which spurred the creation of the Ethical Dilemmas book).

KEYNOTE LUNCHEON

The program will conclude with a keynote luncheon, generously sponsored by the Defense Industry Initiative (DII), from 12:00 – 2:00 pm in GW Law’s Tasher Great Room. The luncheon will feature keynote remarks by Alice Eldridge (JD ’91), senior vice president, General Counsel and Secretary of BAE Systems, Inc..

Alice Eldridge is senior vice president, General Counsel and Secretary of BAE Systems, Inc., responsible for all legal matters associated with BAE Systems, Inc. and its businesses, which collectively employ more than 34,000 employees in the United States, United Kingdom, and Sweden, and generated sales of approximately $12.5 billion in 2021. She is also responsible for the organization’s Contracts, Security, Ethics, Compliance and Export Control functions. Additionally, Eldridge is a member of the BAE Systems, Inc. Board of Directors and Vice Chair of the FNSS – Savunma Sistemleri A.Ş. Joint Venture Board of Directors.

With more than 30 years of legal experience, Eldridge was appointed to this position after serving as vice president and Chief Counsel for the BAE Systems, Inc. Platforms & Services sector, comprised of the Combat Vehicles, Weapons Systems, Ship Repair, Protection Systems, Ordnance Systems, and Hägglunds business units.

Prior to joining BAE Systems in 2012, Eldridge held a number of leadership positions in the legal function for Lockheed Martin Corporation. During her tenure, she also served as vice president of Ethics and Business Conduct.

Eldridge earned her bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science from the University of Vermont at Burlington, and she holds a Juris Doctor degree with honors from the George Washington University, National Law Center in Washington, D.C.
