Khaydarali Yunusov was a visiting scholar from Uzbekistan during the 2004-2005 academic year at The George Washington University. His visit was supported by the Junior Faculty Development Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. His mentor at GWU was Professor Dinah Shelton.
Since gaining independence (August 31, 1991) newborn Uzbekistan is paying increasing attention to the education of highly qualified professionals. Khaydarali Yunusov, as one of those talented and well-educated fellows, was among the grant winners of the Presidential “UMID” Foundation of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan which supports the education of talented youth abroad. He received his Master’s degree in France. He has honor diplomas from Tashkent State National University (1993, History and Sociology faculty), The University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan (1997, International Relations Department) and Sofia-Antipolice University of France (2000, International Public and Private Law Department). In addition, he attended courses at the Diplomatic Academy of London (United Kingdom, 2002, August) and the postgraduate program in conflict resolution at Uppsala University (Sweden, 2004, April-May). He has been a teacher since 2000 at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Tashkent and is currently conducting research in International Law for a Ph.D. degree. Before visiting the USA, he held positions of senior lecturer in International Public Law, Head of the Scientific Board of UWED and supervisor of several research projects. Mr. Yunusov has published more than 50 articles and several scientific manuscripts on political, social and legal areas. Among other publications, his two manuals intended for academic circles are: 1) Uzbekistan: Political Reforms and International Experiences. Tashkent: UWED, 182 pages. 2) The European Union and Communities Law. Tashkent: Ministry of Many of his articles appear on the front pages of popular national newspapers and journals. He also gives interviews for Uzbek television. He is fluent in Uzbek, English, French and Russian languages and has intermediate knowledge of Arabic and Turkish. His knowledge of languages has made him a leading specialist in History, Sociology, Political Sciences and Law. Khaydarali Yunusov is actively involved in the political-institutional reforms of the Republic by participating in the law-making process of the Uzbek national parliament – Oliy Majlis — as an independent lawyer-expert. At GWU he was affiliated with the Law School where he worked on developing new courses in International Public Law, International Law of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law.
