During the summer and fall of 2002, Maria Romanova was a visiting research professor at The George Washington University, affiliated with the Research Program in Social and Organizational Learning. During the 2001-2002 academic year, she had been a visiting scholar at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Her stay in the USA was supported by the Junior Faculty Development Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Her mentor at GWU was Dr. Denis F. Cioffi and at UNK was Dr. Sherry Burlingame.
In 1988 Maria Romanova entered the State University of Management and specialized in Industrial Management. At the same time she began working at the Science Research Institute. She conducted research on how it is possible to combine management, engineering, and information technology. In the fourth year of her studies she participated in a computer competition, and she was hired by the Science Academy of Russia as an Economist. Maria Romanova dealt with science research on the topic of creating a managerial system for introducing innovations in machine-building enterprises. She realized that this field is important for the Russian economy. In 1993 the faculty changed its direction and was renamed “Innovation Management”. She continued her education as a postgraduate student of the State University of Management. At the same time she began to work in the Department of Innovation Management. She taught practical courses in Management Information Systems, Project Management, and Models and Methods for Making Management Decisions. Maria Romanova also gave lectures in the Foundations of Management and in elective subjects (Foundations of Banking, Technical Analysis of Financial Markets, etc.). In 1995 Maria Romanova earned a master’ s degree in Economics and Management. Since then she has taught a practical course in Corporate Information Management Systems, using the examples of BAAN and J.D. Edwards (leading suppliers of integrated management system software). Maria Romanova participated in elaborating a portfolio of computer business games which was used for training students. She took part in creating courses and modules on Risk Management. The portfolio on risk management was displayed at the Exhibition of National Economic Achievement (VDNKh). She also worked as a guest professor at the Institute of International Law and Economy, lecturing on Organization of Production and Business. From 1995 to the present she has been working as a consultant for the western companies “BAAN” and “Robertson Blums.” Now she is investigating mathematical modeling of management and concepts of teaching in Innovation Management. She is interested in making a comparison between western and Russian methods of innovation management and will include suggestions for future co-operation. In 1998 Maria Romanova defended her dissertation on Decision Making for Investment in Innovation Projects. By that time she had published more than 25 articles and two books on different aspects of enterprise management, including methods of management information systems design and implementation. Maria Romanova likes traveling. While she was in America she visited the following places: Denver, Colorado; Georgetown, Colorado; Omaha, Nebraska; Lincoln, Nebraska; Buffalo, New York; New York City; Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans, Louisiana; San Francisco, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Mount Rushmore; Zion National Park; Bryce Canyon; The Grand Canyon; and Yellowstone National Park. Her hobby is writing poems, some of them she has translated from Russian into English. Her poems were selected for publication at the University of Nebraska, Kearney. See also her other website.
