Blakely Murphy

I am a second-year graduate student in the Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program at GWU. I grew up in Smithtown, NY and attended college at Adelphi University in Garden City, NY. At Adelphi, I worked in research labs investigating the role of various stressors on individual mental health and completed an internship at South Oaks Hospital where I worked with children suffering from severe psychopathologies. I also completed a thesis that explored the impact of social network member interference and perceptions of stress between romantic partners on depressive symptoms and relationship satisfaction. This thesis was presented at the 2019 APS conference and recently published in the Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences. After graduating from Adelphi with a BA in Psychology, I started a research internship at Columbia University where I worked on multiple longitudinal research studies examining the long-term impact of stressful experiences—specifically 9/11, domestic violence, and COVID-19—on physical and mental health in ethnic minority youth and young adults. This internship allowed me to gain extensive knowledge on the relationship between stress, disasters, and mental health, as well as continue to develop both my academic writing and presenting skills. In Dr. Rohrbeck’s lab, I am investigating relations between perception of threat and mental health and various moderators such as optimism and racial identity. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, playing beach volleyball, traveling, gardening, shopping, and eating good food.
