We’re back with (F)Riddle Friday, UHPers! Remember, you must submit your answer in the comments below by next Thursday at 3PM ET. This week’s riddle is as follows:

To many, I bring peace,
To others, harm out of the blue.
What am I?”

The answer and winners of last week’s riddle are:

Annabel Hazrati with the first correct answer of dentist!

And Mikailia Loughlin with the most creative incorrect answer of a new friend!

Both of you have been awarded one townhouse token. Congratulations!

Internship Opportunity with Bates White (and a UHP alum!)

My name is Kate Jones, and I graduated from GW in May 2018 with a BS in Economics and Statistics. Since graduating, I have been working as a Consultant at Bates White, an economic consulting firm in Washington, DC. I love my job because I get to work with teams of colleagues at multiple levels to conduct research, analyze large data sets, and leverage statistical tools to tackle complex economic problems. As students in the University Honors Program, your critical thinking and problem-solving skills are likely a great fit for our organization, which leverages these abilities to address real-world issues.

We are currently recruiting students interested in full-time and internship positions and would love to connect with you during the upcoming information session on Tuesday, September 22nd.

Why Bates White?

Weekly Contests, (F)Riddle Fridays, and Townhouse Tokens in Fall 2020

If you took part in the Digital Townhouse Project last semester, you likely remember our Riddles of the Day, our Weekly Contests, and the rewards that awaited you in both: Townhouse Tokens. Well, I’ve got some good news! They’re coming back—though they’ll be a little bit different this semester.

For those of you who don’t know, Townhouse Tokens can be redeemed for several different rewards once we return to campus (and if you graduate before that happens, we’ll figure out a way for you to get them!). You can find the scaling rewards below. As before, if you want an update on how many tokens you have, just email the UHP account, and we’ll tell you!

This semester, instead of daily riddles, we’re making them weekly—(F)Riddle Fridays! And we’re keeping weekly contests, too. As before, each riddle will have two tokens to be won: one for the correct answer, and one for the most creative incorrect one. Weekly contests will usually just have one winner, unless I decide otherwise.

You’ll be getting our first riddle this Friday (9/11), and our first Contest will start next Tuesday! Get excited!

Rewards:

1 Token: a small UHP notepad
3 Tokens: a larger UHP notebook
5 Tokens:
a UHP travel mug
5 Tokens: a UHP t-shirt
8 Tokens: free attendance at a UHP event (Student-faculty dinner, the hike, etc.)
10 Tokens:
free lunch with one of the UHP staff
15 Tokens:
recognition as a Townhouse Paragon, honored in the NewsFlash

Diversity and Inclusion Statement: Updates and an Apology

Dear UHP Students,

Over the last few months, UHP administrators and faculty have heard from members of our community expressing lack of support and alienation during their time in the UHP. We are actively listening to students about their experiences and what we hear motivates us to move more quickly to make necessary changes to ensure that each and every student is well supported and able to thrive and succeed in the UHP and at GW more broadly. We sincerely apologize to all of our students who have experienced alienation in our program, and we fully commit ourselves to doing better moving forward. We recognize these issues as urgent matters of justice that call for immediate action, our earnest care, and ongoing commitment. We are thankful to the many students who have shown great leadership in continuing to call for change and we want our UHP community to understand that addressing these issues will be a top priority in the weeks, months, and years ahead.

As we continue to work to create a more diverse and inclusive UHP, we want to inform you of our immediate, short-term, and long-term goals for our program as a whole. Below you will find an initial roadmap for our work, which includes some of the program’s priorities and will be modified and updated as the UHP Diversity & Inclusion Committee develops additional ideas.

Immediate Goals (Summer 2020)

  • Implementation of a self-governed Diversity & Inclusion Committee
  • Participation in #GWInSolidarity by faculty and staff
  • Anti-bias training for peer advisors (followed by continued discussion)
  • Ongoing curriculum discussion amongst the core faculty
  • Begin to work on improving student awareness of GW’s Bias Incident Response system

Short Term Goals (2020-2021 Academic Year)

  • Anti-bias training for faculty, staff and students (followed by continued discussions)
  • Improved first-year and general community building
  • Working with Admissions to more clearly define our admissions criteria and to improve advertising of the UHP to students applying to GW (including an improved UHP website)
  • UHP website page dedicated to reporting on ongoing Diversity and Inclusion initiatives
  • Ongoing curriculum updates to first-year courses
  • Ongoing discussions between UHP students, administration and faculty to improve diversity, inclusion and belonging with the goal of building trust in our UHP community

Long Term Goals

  • Sustaining a welcoming community through programming, yearly anti-bias training, and continued collaborative D&I discussions
  • Recruiting and retaining a more diverse student body and faculty
  • More variety in UHP upper-level course offerings

We also want to share with you that during the summer, we held our first UHP Diversity & Inclusion Committee meetings. Our conversations were open, honest, and productive. The group is developing a non-hierarchical organization so that students, faculty, and staff have an equal voice in raising concerns, discussing issues, and making recommendations to the program. The faculty and administration who participated in these initial conversations are particularly grateful for the candor of our student participants, and we welcome any additional students who would like to become members of the committee at any time (simply complete this brief form). We will keep the UHP community as a whole updated on the progress of the committee through a minimum of one report per semester (which will be posted on our blog and announced through the weekly Honors NewsFlash).

In solidarity,
The UHP Administration & Faculty

Microsoft Teams – The Newest Realm of the Digital Townhouse!

The Digital Townhouse Project is going to look a little different this year– and we’re not sure exactly the extent of that yet– but one thing we do know? We’re adding a platform for you all to build community amongst each other, outside of established events and such: MICROSOFT TEAMS!

Microsoft Teams is similar to Slack or Discord, with several different channels in which you can hold conversation. Right now, we’ve got channels for announcements, hanging out, random thoughts and memes, and more! Delightfully enough, you can also do group video chats through this software, so you can start a meeting in any of our “social channels” and folks can come and drop in to meet you there.

Also, we’ve got some expectations and guidelines that you should read through before participating in the space. We want this to be a safe and welcoming space, and that requires some rules!

I really hope this will be a space for you all to develop community, continue developing communities you’ve already established, and make new friends. You can join the UHP Team right here.

Also: you can use it in your web browser, but also download it for your desktop or your smartphone! Download links are below.

Hope to see you all there!
