Navigating a Path to Universal Healthcare

The affordability and access to healthcare is one of the most significant issues expressed by the US public today.  Universal healthcare, also known as universal health coverage, is a healthcare system in which all individuals have access to healthcare and financial protection, regardless of their ability to pay. But what does healthcare for all actually mean to all of us, and why does it matter? Let’s talk about what we can do to lead efforts to expedite the transformation of a fragmented and fractured model of healthcare delivery to an integrated and high functioning system grounded by universal access to healthcare.

MEPicides as Promising Antimicrobials
Tuberculosis (TB) and malaria are continued threats to global public health. Drug resistance plus co-infection with others pathogens such as HIV have made the need for new antimicrobial therapies increasingly urgent. Our lab takes advantage of unique enzymes within pathogen metabolism to discover novel therapeutics. One such pathway is the MEP pathway of isoprenoid biosynthesis. Our novel small molecule inhibitors of the MEP pathway are effective and attractive antimicrobial agents.

The Big Flip: Racial Demographic Change and the Future of Democracy in America
How will American democracy change when the nation becomes majority-minority for the first time in its history? There is no change at this moment of greater magnitude than racial demographic change. All across the country, Americans of color are increasing in size, while white Americans are effectively stagnant in their growth as a group. There is an inflection point in the context of these changes that the U.S. has yet to reach, but has since been predicted on a number of fronts. Through demographic trends, this point is where white Americans will become a minority and Americans of color will become the majority. Known now as the majority-minority flip, I call this moment the big flip. I show through a variety of empirical tests that the misperceptions and threat from the big flip threaten the future of democracy in America. The more that Americans, and namely Republican Americans, buy into the big flip, the more likely they want to “flip” democracy. When ideas of the Flip are primed, frightened Americans become more supportive of violence and authoritarian leaders, and ultimately are less supportive of the system of democracy.

What are WoW TALKS?

The WoW TALK (What’s Our Work) Series brings together colleagues and students from a variety of disciplines to present new research and share ideas. These short, TED-style talks (15 minutes each) are designed to introduce members of the GW community to current and exciting research projects, to initiate discussion, collaborate, share expertise, and to promote research performed at GW. These talks are an opportunity to gain awareness of the different kinds of important work being done at GW, and can open the door for future collaboration opportunities. They are targeted to an educated lay-audience in order to be accessible to graduate students and colleagues from other fields. All WoW TALK sessions are held in person in Science and Engineering Hall B1220. To be considered to speak at a future session, complete the volunteer form here. For any other enquiries, please contact us at ccasres@gwu.edu.
