Nives Mikelic is a visiting scholar for the 2005-2006 academic year at The George Washington University. Her visit is sponsored by the Junior Faculty Development Program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Ms. Mikelic is affiliated with the Department of Linguistics. Her mentor at The George Washington University is Professor William Frawley, Dean of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences.

In Croatia she teaches the undergraduate course Introduction to Natural Language Processing. Also, she is the teaching assistant for the undergraduate courses Knowledge Management and Theory of Information Science in the Information Science field at the Faculty of Philosophy. She has her own lecture section with the topic “information retrieval and multimedia education” in the Knowledge Management course. She was also teaching the undergraduate course Electronic Media in the Technical Polytechnic in Zagreb. She has been the supervisor for a few BA theses in information science.

She is a research assistant in the project: Knowledge Typology and Methods of Information Processing led by Prof. Miroslav Tuđman. She participates as well in the scientific project: Croatian Dictionary Heritage and Dictionary Knowledge Presentation, funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology. Her PhD is in the field of natural language processing, more precisely, she is working on the development of a computer thesaurus for the Croatian language. She also participated in building the paradigmatic model and structure for the inflectional database of Croatian first and last names.
