Opportunities to Continue to Serve: engageDC and SMARTDC

Given the continued need for social connections but physical distancing, many students may find that their ability to make a positive difference in the community is helpful for their own well-being. Students with Federal Work-Study can even earn funding through this work.

Two Nashman Center opportunities to continue to serve:  engageDC and GW SMARTDC:

For now, all service opportunities for both programs this Spring are virtual, meaning you do not have to be in the D.C. area to apply for our FWS jobs or non-FWS volunteer participant positions for either program.

SMARTDC
In partnership with DC Public Schools and seven community-based organizations, GW SMARTDC is committed to providing quality, one-on-one or group tutoring (virtual) for K-8 students in Washington, DC. Tutors work towards educational equity by building literacy and math skills with local D.C. students while fostering meaningful relationships. SMARTDC offers both paid Federal Work Study and unpaid, non-FWS tutor positions. You can fill out the SMARTDC interest application here.

Once you fill out the interest application, we will review your application and follow up with you about potential next steps depending on if you are Federal Work-Study or non-FWS student. If you have further follow-up questions about SMARTDC, please email us at smartdc@gwu.edu.

engageDC
Through engageDC, GW students serve with one of nine partner community organizations in Washington, DC. Students provide service to meet the everyday needs addressed by the organization such as tutoring, meal preparation or program support and coordination.

In addition, students work with the organization to address issues that build the organization’s capacity, expand the mission or address infrastructure issues, such as program evaluation, volunteer management, web design or developing new program areas. engageDC offers both paid Federal Work-Study and unpaid, non-FWS participant positions. You can fill out the engDC interest application here.

Once you fill out the interest application, we will review your application and follow up with you about potential next steps depending on if you are Federal Work-Study or non-FWS. If you have further follow-up questions, please email us at engagedc@gwu.edu.
