Apply to be a 2014 CI Staffer
Do you enjoy working with kids and want to be a part of 2014 Colonial Inauguration? We are currently looking for this summer’s CI Staffers!
CI Staffers work for the Siblings Program during Colonial Inauguration. The Siblings Program allows younger siblings to learn more about GW and gives them insight on where their older brothers and sisters will be spending the next four years. Duties range from guiding the siblings around DC throughout CI to interacting with and providing information to incoming first-year students and their families.
This is a unique opportunity where you will gain professional work experience, personal connections with fellow staff and administrators, and have fun while welcoming new families into the GW community. Training will start in the spring and the position will run through early July.
Come learn more about the CI Siblings Program and how to apply at an information session, which will be held November 4-8th. You must attend an information session to apply.
The dates and times of the information sessions are:
- Monday, November 4: 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm, Multicultural Student Services Center 209
- Tuesday, November 5: 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, Marvin Center 309
- Wednesday, November 6: 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm, Mount Vernon Campus (MVC) West Hall B108B
- Thursday, November 7: 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm, Marvin Center 407
- Friday, November 8: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm Thurston Piano Lounge
Applications due November 15th.
Please contact Siblings Program Coordinator, Melissa Mogollon, at staffers@gwu.edu or (202) 994-GWCI (4924) if you are unable to attend any of the information sessions or if you have any questions.
Extreme Makeover: Honors Edition
If you’ve ever heard from one of your friends, “I wish I was in the Honors Program!” then you should:
- tell them to sign up for sophomore application information for the Honors Program;
- stop rubbing your registration date in your friends’ faces.
When your friends sign up at go.gwu.edu/apply2uhp they’ll automatically receive the application when it’s available. Students can only apply to join the UHP during the second semester of their freshman year, and the UHP only accepts 15 students to start in the UHP as sophomores. Competition is tough, but it’s definitely worth it!
Tell your friends to sign up at go.gwu.edu/apply2uhp for information on sophomore admission to the Honors Program.
John Cage Exhibition at Gallery 102!
“Caged In: DC Painters Explore the Aesthetic Influences of John Cage,” curated by UHPer Roxanne Goldberg, opens with a reception this Thursday, September 19 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Gallery 102 in Smith Hall of Art, 801 22nd St. NW.
Stop by for some free food and a fantastic opportunity to meet the DC-based artists who created these exceptional works of art based on a recording of the John Cage 25-Year Retrospective, famously performed at the NYC Town Hall in 1958.

UHP student Roxanne Goldberg will be moderating this panel discussion with Executive Director of the John Cage Trust Laura Kuhn, Co-Director of the Centennial John Cage Festival Washington, DC Steve Antosca and Black Mountain College Scholar Kate Markoski.

Hey, You Should Really Be In Honors!
If you’ve got friends that would make a good fit for the University Honors Program, be a friend to them and let them know about sophomore admission to the UHP!
Students can apply to the UHP during the second semester of their freshmen year. Make sure they don’t miss the application by having them sign up for an information request at our website.
Signing up for that list will get you one or two emails in the early spring semester notifying when the internal application to the Honors Program is available. We won’t abuse any emails and promise not to sell it to spammers.
When it comes time to apply, second-semester students will need a letter of rec from GWU faculty and a writing sample among other things. Some good advice for prospective applicants: build a relationship with a professor, and do some excellent writing.
And of course, signing up for the sophomore admit info request list is a sure fire way to make sure the application doesn’t get missed.
Should School Go All Year?
Check out this post at the New York Times that argues that summer vacation makes inequality in America worse.
From the article:
The entire issue tends to vanish from public debate, because the educated, affluent people who run the debate don’t particularly suffer from it. Summer vacation costs money, but prosperous parents are happy to spend it on their kids. And of course there’s the sentimentality factor.
What do you think? School is important — should it go for all 12 months a year?
