If you’re interested in taking control of your UHP experience and helping others succeed, consider applying to become a SPA! SPA members help fellow students with course selection, conflict resolution, time management and extracurriculars as well as provide a student perspective of the UHP to prospective students and parents.

Brown Bag Lunches w/ the UHP

We’re trying something new this semester: Brown Bag Lunches with the UHP!
Any staff, faculty, and students in the UHP are welcome to come join us for lunch in the UHP club room this Thursday (2/7/13) at noon.  Remember though, it’s bring your own lunch!
The concept is simple: we’re having lunch.  Have lunch with us!  We’ll chat. Maybe about UHP stuff, maybe about JJ Abrams and Star Wars, maybe about the pros and cons of making your own yogurt and mustards, maybe about existential angst. You know, whatever.  It’s lunch.  We’re shooting to do these regularly on the first Thursdays of the month, but check our events calendar (or add it right into your own calendar) to make sure we’re still on.
Remember this is BYOB — Bring Your Own Brown-Bag (with food in it.) (That means bring your own lunch.) (If you don’t have your own lunch, you can’t have mine.) (I will not trade you my PB&J for your tuna fish. I will never trade you anything for your tuna fish.)

Addicted to Books? [Good Article]

Check out this post from Michael Dirda as he talks about the problems of a particular kind of addiction — books! Are you one of those notorious book hoarders too?
From the American Scholar article:

Now this is bad, very bad. These days I can hardly step away from this desk and not find myself gravitating to a used-book store and pulling out my credit card. I can almost always justify my purchases as sensible, reasonable courses of action. All addicts do this.

Incidentally, Michael Dirda will be visiting GWU soon for his UHP-sponsored talk on Sherlock Holmes.

Is there an Inspired Teacher in you?

Earn your teaching license while making a difference in the classroom

The Inspired Teacher Certification Program is now accepting applications for the 2013 cohort of Inspired Teaching Fellows. Grounded in the belief that teaching is an intellectually rigorous and demanding profession, the Inspired Teacher Certification Program uses the unique structure of the residency model to prepare new teachers. Participants in our residency program have a full year to develop the skills of engaging diverse students, managing classrooms, and planning effective lessons by working alongside an experienced Lead Teacher. Instead of being fast-tracked into the teaching profession, our Fellows are better prepared for the challenges of teaching in an urban, high-poverty classroom.  Continue reading “Is there an Inspired Teacher in you?”
