What Makes You "Honors" [Good Article]

Have you ever wondered exactly why it is that you’re an “honors” student?
Do you think of yourself as an inherently smart person?  Do things come easy to you because you’re just bright?
Or do you think of yourself as a person that puts in more effort than others? Do you struggle for your A’s?
According to this great article from NPR, your perception about yourself might come from your cultural upbringing.  And the effects can go far beyond what you might imagine.
From the article:

Obviously if struggle indicates weakness — a lack of intelligence — it makes you feel bad, and so you’re less likely to put up with it. But if struggle indicates strength — an ability to face down the challenges that inevitably occur when you are trying to learn something — you’re more willing to accept it.

We Like You… Why Not "Like" Us?

It only took developers five weeks to create Farmville… think of all the time that the 80 million people who play Farmville spend playing it. Makes you feel productive, huh?

We may not play Mafia Wars with you or help you build a fence in Farmville, but we do have facebook timeline!  If you “Like” us on Facebook we’ll be able to see all of the cool things you’re doing – and you’ll be able to see cool UHP-related news, opportunities, free food events, and photos! We also have been known to “like” what you’re up to as well. But not in a weird creepy stalker way…

Baby William's Book Tasting

As a member of the UHP’s intellectual community, junior program officer William Chandler offers book recommendations beyond your syllabi.

WOAH FINGERS!

My parents always told me you can’t read Gibbon’s “Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire” straight through without a breather.  So I recently picked up, then repeatedly dropped, Learn the Alphabet with Northwest Coast Native Art,” a charming hardcover from the shop at the Museum of the American Indian right here in DC!
With images such as (WOAH, JUST LOOKED AT MY HANDS! WOAH!! WOAH.) “F frog”, “J journey” and “U unity” made up of stylized animals, plants and natural forms in exciting color combinations, the book provides an excellent introduction to the popular artistic tradition of the Pacific Northwest.  And letters.
The book is also printed in soy-based inks on paper sourced from sustainable forests with non-toxic coatings, making it ecologically sound as well as safe to nom.  (OMG I’M SO HUNGRY). Educational, visually stimulating and fun to chew, “Learn the Alphabet” earns 4 out of 5 “Goos.”

James Joyce Loved ….. Cats [Good Article]

Loved cats. Not so sure about Danes.

Why do cats rule the Internet? Probably because people who love to write also inexplicably love cats.  Likewise, cats love to write (or they would if they could.  They certainly love keyboards.)
The UHP of course, takes every opportunity to use pictures of cats online — but did you know that some pretty famous writers share our infatuation?
Turns out that James Joyce wrote a charming letter to his grandson in 1936 that has recently been published as a short story.  Guess what the story features prominently: cats.
Check out the full article over at BrainPickings to read more about it, and see the whimsical illustrations that accompany the story.

Difficult is Doable [Ask the Sherpa]

Sherpa, the sherpa

A student asks:

Dear Sherpa,
I’m in a really tough science class right now.  It’s so hard, I’m actually getting a bad grade!  That is to say, it’s not an A.  Here’s the problem: I have to take the second half of the class next semester, too!  It’s a requirement of the program, so I can’t just bail on it if I don’t want to get kicked out.  I’m freaking out. I don’t think I can do it.  What should I do?
Yours,
Avogadro’s Blunder

Registration, Scheduling, and Advising Help

The superstorm knocked us out for a couple days, but so long as the University is back up and operational this week, we’ll be back to help you figure out your schedule in time for registration! Here’s what you can do:
1) Email as many of your questions and completed approval forms (for CCAS students to get their holds lifted) as you can! You can email right to Liz or Catherine, or to uhp@gwu.edu.
2) Attend the hold removal/schedule advising bagel party on Wednesday from 10am-12pm in the UHP town house in Foggy Bottom.
3) Attend walk-in hours on Thursday, Friday, and Monday (11/1, 11/2, 11/5).  From 10am-4pm on both campuses, walk in for advising.  It’s first come, first served, so come early (and maybe bring some homework to read if you have to wait.)
4) Attend evening walk-in hours in Foggy Bottom from 5-7pm on Wednesday.
5) Make an appointment. Right now, there aren’t any appointments available until Tuesday (11/6).  If you can wait, that’s fine.  Otherwise, check out the three other options above.
Remember, you can always find all of our courses and descriptions at our website here.
