SURE Award – 2022 Applications Open!

Did you know that Honors students have the opportunity to win up to $500 for their research? It’s true!  Apply to the UHP/Sigelman Undergraduate Research Enhancement Award (SURE) and we might just cut you a check.

Any current Honors Program student who is engaged in research may compete for an individual grant of up to $500 to support his or her research activities. Activities may include (but are not limited to) the purchase of research equipment or supplies; registration and travel expenses for conference presentations; travel to libraries or archives; and videography costs associated with the documentation of performances.

One former winner shares their story on how they used their SURE funding to study the intersection of science and religion here.

The application includes:

  2. Proposed Budget detailing how the funds will be used
  3. GW Faculty Statement of support

CCAS Undergraduate Research Fellowship Opportunities – Luther Rice and Cisneros

The Columbian College of Arts & Sciences as well as the Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute are offering research funding opportunities for all interested undergraduates. These projects can be used as an Honors thesis for any interested UHP seniors, or valuable research experience for underclassmen.

Luther Rice Undergraduate Research Fellowship

The Luther Rice research fellowship aims to support CCAS’ undergraduate initiative to promote discovery-based education through the undergraduate experience at GW. The research project should undertake a significant, focused examination of an idea or an area of inquiry and result in work that could merit presentation or publication in a scholarly venue.

Requirements:

  • Must be a Columbian College sophomore or junior
  • Must have a full-time faculty mentor
  • Must have a declared major
  • Must have no judicial or disciplinary findings against them

Details:

  • The fellowships typically provide $3,000-$5,000 to the student for research-related expenditures, including summer living expenses, travel, materials, and equipment.
  • Faculty mentors receive up to $1,000 for salary or professional development.
  • There are two deadlines for submission. Students who apply in the fall and are not selected for funding may revise and resubmit their proposals in the spring:
    • Monday, December 6, 2021 at 5pm ET
    • Monday, February 28, 2022 at 5pm ET

Cisneros Undergraduate Research Fellowship

The Cisneros research fellowship provides support to rising juniors and seniors for research projects that address an issue of relevance to Hispanics/Latinos in the United States. The Cisneros Institute works in conjunction with CCAS to offer this undergraduate research opportunity. Students are offered the opportunity to employ the skills learned in their field of study to bring to fruition a well-defined research project that addresses a particular issue of relevance to Hispanics/Latinos.

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be a full-time undergraduate student at GW
  • Recipient must be enrolled at GW throughout the tenure of the award
  • Only full-time faculty can serve as faculty mentors
  • Faculty mentors must be associated with GW during the tenure of the award

Details:

  • The Cisneros Institute provides an award of $5,000 meant to support student’s research-related expenditures, which may include living expenses, travel, materials, and equipment
  • Faculty mentors receive a stipend of $1,000 – Faculty can opt to take this money as supplemental salary or asked that funds be transferred to a departmental account (i.e. supporting travel, equipment, etc.)
  • There are two deadlines for submission. Students who apply in the fall and are not selected for funding may revise and resubmit their proposals in the spring:
    • Monday, December 6, 2021 at 5pm ET
    • Monday, February 28, 2022 at 5pm ET

Students may apply to both awards at the same time and will be considered through the same review process. 

Full-time or Internship Consultant Positions at Bates White

Bates White, an economic consulting firm in DC, is hiring interns and full-time Consultants and Summer Consultants. Interviews are extended on a rolling basis, so applying earlier is encouraged. Kate Jones, a UHP alumna who reached out about this opportunity, emphasizes that she loves the intellectually stimulating environment at Bates White. Teams of consultants collaborate to research, conduct data analysis, and leverage statistical tools to address complex economic problems for attorneys and government agencies in areas like life sciences, finance, and antitrust.

Consultants and Summer Consultants participate in technical training sessions, have access to external resources like DataCamp, and receive assigned mentors for continual learning and support. Full-Time and Internship Opportunity

Full-Time Position:

As an analyst with Analysis Group, you will:

Summer Intern Program:

As an introduction to the analyst role, Analysis Group hires summer analysts into a robust 8-week internship program, generally the year before graduation. Summer analysts’ responsibilities and contributions are equivalent to a full time analyst. Summer analysts are staffed onto at least one case team, where they are able to make tangible contributions. They also receive exposure to the firm’s work, staff, and culture through technical and soft skill training, practice area overviews, informal meetings with staff, and firm social outings. Many summer analysts receive and accept offers to return to Analysis Group full time upon graduation.

The GW Writing Center is a lively, collaborative learning environment with paid consultants who come from a diverse array of backgrounds and disciplines. Sophomores, juniors, and first-year students who will have completed UW1020 by the end of the fall semester are welcome to apply.

Summer Associate at Berkeley Research Group

BRG is hiring a Summer Associate at any of their offices, which includes Washington DC, Chicago, New York, and Boston. The Summer Associate position is a temporary position as a member of our consulting staff for the summer of 2022. This position will include 8 weeks working as an entry level staff member. The position requires a highly motivated problem solver with above average analytical ability. The work of a Summer Associate can be either qualitative or quantitative in nature, and projects can range from industry and subject matter research to data collection to the preparation of statistical, financial, and other forms of analysis. Job Responsibilities

  • Summer Associate positions are typically reserved for students who have one year remaining in their academic program.
  • Proven capability with MS Excel and statistical analysis programs (e.g. SAS, SQL, SPSS, Stata, R) is preferred. A desire to expand those capabilities is required.

The Berkeley Research Group, LLC is hiring a full-time associate in their DC office. BRG is a global consulting firm that helps leading organizations advance in three key areas: disputes and investigations, corporate finance, and strategy and operations. The Associate in DC would be heavily involved in data analysis and general business tasks in support of the firm’s industry experts.

The Associate position is a full-time entry-level consulting staff position for fall of 2022. Job responsibilities include:

Student Research Assistant

Student Research Assistant
The Department of English is looking to hire a student research assistant who will work approximately 6 hours per week (60 hours total per semester) with Prof. Alexa Alice Joubin on her new book on Shakespeare on film which is supported by the GW Humanities Center. This is an entry level position, and all training will be provided. However, English or humanities majors are preferred.
Tasks may include: formatting and providing uniformity to manuscripts, creating an index for a book, collecting data and compiling an annotated bibliography. Student may also help provide information for literature reviews and draft summaries. Other duties may be assigned related to specific faculty needs.
