New: Impact Awards 2022

Program Description

New for 2022: Impact Awards provide up to $3,000 per award for research and scholarly expenses of all kinds, other than faculty summer salary, in the current fiscal year. The funding can be used for such things as collecting preliminary data, traveling to an archive or to collect data, funding a student to assist in research or scholarly activities (including work-study students), purchasing materials needed for research, etc. The Dean's office anticipates making approximately 25 awards. Details on submission, review, and notification procedures are as follows.

Deadline: Applications must be submitted in Infoready by 4:00pm EST on November 28th, 2022.

Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

Any regular faculty (either tenure-line faculty or contract faculty who have contractual responsibility for teaching, research, and service) budgeted to CCAS may apply.

Submit application materials in one PDF file through InfoReady. Note that the description of the proposed project and the budget and justification are limited to one page in length each. The list of current and pending awards should detail all current external and internal funding, whether directly related to the project or not, so it has no length limit. Pages should have at least 1” margins on all sides, and be no smaller than 11 point font. The file should be named in the format Impact_LastName.pdf, and contain the following items:

  1. Cover page with: Faculty Name, Department, Academic Rank, and Proposal Title.
  2. Limited to 1 page: Description of proposed project to be supported by the Impact Award. It is essential that this:
    • briefly explains the motivation for the activity to be supported in the broader context;
    • explains exactly what activities will be supported and the concrete aims of these activities;
    • justifies how this supported activity will enhance your research/scholarship and describe the expected outcome/product; and
    • explains the criticality of the support to your scholarship/research.
  1. No longer than 1 pageA brief itemized budget and justification, explaining what exactly would be funded by the support. Where the faculty member has existing intramural or extramural funding, they should justify why this activity cannot be funded by those sources.
  2. A list of ALL current and pending intramural and extramural support, including award period, funding source, and title of award, regardless of its relationship to the proposed project. There is no page limit on Current and Pending Support. If the faculty member does not have current or pending support, that should be clearly stated. Finally, if the faculty member also intends to apply for an Enhanced Travel Award, this should be noted, and the relationship between the applications and explained in Current and Pending Support.

N.B. The Infoready application portal requests a brief abstract of the proposal. This will be used purely to help allocate appropriate reviewers and will not form part of the proposal review.

Review Process

The applications will be reviewed by a committee of the CCAS Research Advisory Council, which consists of three faculty from each academic division, potentially augmented by additional ad hoc members. This committee will review application packages and make recommendations to the Dean.

Notification of Decisions

The Dean will make all efforts to notify applicants of the funding decisions by the end of the Fall 2022 semester.

Assessment Criteria For Impact Awards

The review committee will use the following assessment criteria:

  • How well is the overall research or scholarly activity motivated?
  • Are the specific aims of the requested support clearly defined?
  • How critical is the requested support for the PI’s research / scholarly activity?
  • What is the likelihood of success of the proposed activity?
  • How impactful is the planned activity?
  • Is the budget well-justified and reasonable?

Further Review Information

  • In cases where the faculty member has other intramural and / or extramural support, the committee will review the application package to determine if the proposed activity is clearly separate from the already supported efforts.
  • Preference will be given to faculty members without other sources of support.
  • Applications which do not follow the formatting guidelines or fail to adhere to the single-page limits for the narrative and budget outlined above may be rejected without review.
