How an Easy-to-Use Dialogue Tool is Enhancing Learning and Fostering Belonging in Classrooms, Campuses, and Beyond: A Conversation with Living Room Conversations Higher Ed Practitioners

Living Room Conversations (LRC) is hosting a virtual event on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at 2:00 PM Eastern time to discuss how their dialogue tool enhances learning and fosters belonging in higher education settings. The 90-minute session will introduce the LRC model and explore its applications in civic education, social cohesion, and student leadership development.

To participate, GW faculty and administrators can register here.  The session will feature case studies and best practices from faculty and staff who have implemented LRC in various campus settings, including curricula, campus conversations, research, and community engagement.

HumanitiesX at DePaul University and the University of Arizona's Department of Public and Applied Humanities are hosting an online summer workshop series on "Teaching the Publicly-Engaged Humanities to Undergraduates" later this month. The series features presentations on courses and assignments involving community and public engagement, with opportunities for attendees to discuss their own work.

GW faculty interested in community writing and public humanities can register for one, two, or all sessions on the HumanitiesX website. The workshops offer valuable insights into integrating public engagement into undergraduate humanities courses.

The Coalition of Urban & Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) is hosting its final MUJ Dialogue Series webinar of the spring on Tuesday, June 18, from 3-3:45 p.m. ET. This session, titled "Productive Tensions and Uncomfortable Conversations," focuses on public scholarship for innovative practice and epistemic justice in higher education.

AAC&U is calling for proposals for their 2024 Conference on Global Learning. The conference will take place October 24-26, 2024 in Washington DC. Proposals are due May 10, 2024. Click here to learn more.

The Changemakers Retreat is an intensive, in-person leadership development experience intended to hone skills, build community, and empower current and aspiring changemakers. The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) is hosting its annual Institute on Engaged and Integrative Learning (IEIL) virtually from July 16–19, 2024. This institute provides a collaborative opportunity for institutions to explore evidence-based strategies that enhance student learning experiences both on campus and in the community.

The institute offers mentorship from experienced faculty and resources to create an action plan for advancing engaged and integrative learning at your institution. Interested GW faculty and administrators should apply as soon as possible. The priority deadline is April 30.

The International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement is calling for proposals for their 2024 conference. The theme of the conference this year is "Intersections". Click here for more information.

Submissions are encouraged to connect to the theme Intersections and the following thematic areas:

  • Student outcomes at K-12, Undergraduate and Graduate levels
  • Emerging technologies in SLCE

Fran Buntman (Sociology) and Wendy Wagner (Nashman Center) have been selected for the Civic Engagement and Voting Rights Teacher Scholars program (hosted by Clemson University and supported through the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation). They will spend the coming year engaged in nation-wide Faculty Learning Communities, attend an institute and several convenings, and will ultimately create and disseminate educational materials on civic and voting rights education. These include in-class learning activities, as well as syllabi that bring issues of civic engagement and voting rights into the classroom.
