The latest issue of the International Journal of Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) is now fully online. Volume 9, Issue 1 (2021) contains 12 articles in 5 sections, plus an introduction to the issue.

Published annually in December, IARSLCE is the scholarly journal of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE).

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Global 16 Days Campaign. From November 25th to December 10th, the Center for Women’s Global Leadership (CWGL) launched their commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence. In an article published by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), GW was highlighted for their participation in the Pathways of Public Service and Civic Engagement project. The Ethical Tech Initiative (ETI) of DC is pushing to provide access to justice and educational technology to incarcerated persons in the District of Columbia. In recent news, GW will join the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) U-Pass program. This program offers unlimited rides on the Metrorail and Metrobus for a discounted, flat fee for full-time students. The program will begin on December 1st and will offer a 3-week free trial.

A recent opinion piece in the GW Hatchet titled, “GW must act as members of Foggy Bottom community, not its owners,” questions whether GW’s redevelopment plans have transformed Washington D.C.’s Foggy Bottom community into solely GW’s property. Author, Ethan Benn, writes a compelling story, urging the University’s administration, students, and community partners to “carefully consider the realities of future development.”

AACUcivic shared an important innovation from Tufts University’s Institute for Democracy & Higher Education today. The “IDHE’s Campus Boundaries Project allows institutional leaders, students, civic organizations, activists, and public officials to examine where Congressional and State district lines are currently drawn. With this tool, users can identify student communities of interest, particularly minority student populations, that are at risk of partisan gerrymandering.”

This tool is the 'Inclusive Growth Dashboard' by the Greater Washington Partnership.

NPR summarized the tool as follows:

"Greater Washington Partnership's inclusive growth dashboard tool is designed to highlight the racial wealth gaps in the region, analyze what drives those inequities, and provide policy recommendations for both lawmakers and local business leaders. Compiled using publicly available data, the new tracker shows that the D.C. area's economy — while one of the wealthiest in the U.S. — has deep racial gaps."

African immigrants in the United States are one of the fastest-growing immigrant communities. Too often their experiences are lumped in with the experiences of US-born Black Americans. Because of language, culture, the impact of migration, and other factors, African immigrants have needs and stories distinctively different from US-born Black Americans. This discussion will provide an overview on African immigrant health. It will also seek to highlight current research and increase awareness of the need for community-led research that supports service delivery and advocacy.

This spring, the CivXNow policy team tracked nearly 90 bills in 34 state legislatures pertaining to civic education. The bulk of these bills were designed to strengthen K–12 civic education, and many made it across the finish line with bipartisan support as legislatures adjourned for the summer.
