Course Spotlight: COMM 1041

Congrats to Professor Weiner on a great Fall 2020 semester with Interpersonal Communication (COMM 1041). See below for highlights.

Professor Weiner's Community Engaged Scholarship (CES) course, Interpersonal Communication (COMM 1041), provides students an opportunity to further develop their understanding of interpersonal communication theories and principles within a service-learning environment.

In the Fall, Professor Weiner's 25 students served 300+ hours! Students served with Candace Valenzuela for Congress, Capital Peers, Civic Engine, College Next Door, Education Rocks, Free Minds Book Club, GW Alternative Breaks, GSEHD Faculty & Students & ACAPS, GWupstart, GW Votes, Humanity First, Latino Student Fund, Project Pathways, Ron and Joy Paul Kidney Center, School Without Walls High School, Serve Your City, and YWCA.

A student who served with Free Minds Book Club reflected, “I think Free Minds is doing an excellent job connecting the public to those who are currently incarcerated by means of poetry and feedback. Reading the poems opens my eyes and puts a new perspective on how I see the world. I will definitely be attending future Free Minds Write Night events!

A student who served with YWCA reflected, “I had a talk with my mentee about self-confidence, self-esteem and self-care. I also took some time to help my mentee with an upcoming assignment that she has for a class. So far I really enjoy the relationship that we are building, she is very kind and sweet.”

A student who served with Latino Student Fund reflected, “I tutored a student in the eighth grade in the Latino student fund where we specifically focused on math. We made use of Khan Academy videos in order to help go over methods in order to solve problems from his math homework. We then focused on solving specific problems from his math homework where we used a blackboard over a zoom meeting in order for him to write the problems that we would go over.”
