Jordan West, Associate Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Community Engagement shares two new resources regarding immigration. Know Your Rights Under the U.S. Constitution - Updated April 2024 by the National Immigration Law Center and a Webinar, Deportation Defense Series by Mijente.
The National Immigration Law Center has released a recently updated guide outlining constitutional rights that apply to everyone living in the United States, regardless of immigration status.
The guide provides critical information about:
- Your right to remain silent
- When and how to talk with immigration officers
- What to do if ICE comes to your home
- Your right to speak with a lawyer
- Documentation to carry and not carry
- Creating a safety plan
- Finding legal help
- Reporting raids and arrests
"No matter who is president, everyone living in the U.S. has certain basic rights under the U.S. Constitution. Undocumented immigrants have these rights, too. If you find you have to deal with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or other law enforcement officers at home, on the street, or anywhere else, remember that you have the rights described in this factsheet. The factsheet also provides suggestions for what you should do to assert your rights."
