Conversation Recap: CBPR and the IRB Review

On October 4, 2023, the Nashman Center hosted a Conversations on Community Engaged Scholarship event on Community-Based Participatory Research and the IRB Review, in partnership with GW's Office of Human Research (OHR/IRB).

Key messages from this event focused on the necessity of a collaborative relationship between researchers and their OHR/IRB Reviewing Analyst. Issues in the discussion included:
  • incentives vs. compensation for study subjects vs. study partners
  • resources available in OHR (example: PhotoVoice Guide)
  • providing adequate training for community members (example: CITI Training)

A repeated sentiment was, "You don't have to figure out that question, just ask OHR. Treat them as a collaborative partner on your study."

Many thanks to the panel presenters, included OHR representatives as well as two Nashman Center Affiliate Faculty with experience conducting CBPR studies.
