Event Recap: Welcome to Community Engaged Scholarship

Last Friday (date) the Nashman Center gathered leaders of local community organizations and student leaders for panel discussions aimed at preparing students in Community Engaged Scholarship courses this semester to maximize their experience.

The community partner panel represented organizations that serve local youth, older/aging adults, and adults with disabilities.

  • Blanca Agudelo, Latino Student Fund
  • Denise Snyder, Foggy Bottom West End Village
  • Claude Thomas, Our Stomping Ground

All panelists emphasized the importance of entering community spaces with respect and an open-mind. They emphasized their goal to connect GW students' unique skillsets with opportunities to serve in their communities. Students were encouraged to think creatively about how they can contribute to the organizations' goals.

Student panelists all had multiple experiences with community engagement through courses. They encouraged students to build relationships in the community and not simply complete requested tasks.
