To contribute to a just transition to a regenerative economy and an equitable society, academia can accelerate its own shift toward conducting more community-engaged research (CER) for environmental justice (EJ). Faculty, students, and staff do CER when they design and conduct research with communities, not simply on or for them. This includes community-based participatory research, participatory action research, some kinds of citizen science, and other approaches. CER aligns well with EJ, which demands not only a fair distribution of environmental and health benefits, and equitable protections under law, but also full participation by EJ communities in making decisions that affect them. This includes decisions about the research agenda, whose knowledge matters, and what responses should be implemented in response to research findings."
