Freshmen in their second semester can apply to join the Honors Program. The deadline is February 14th, 2014.
Students accepted will start in the UHP the beginning of their sophomore year, and are required to take a special class during the fall 2014 semester.
If you’re not in the UHP and you want to be, please apply! If you’re already in the UHP — we know you’ve got friends that would be perfect for the UHP, so encourage them to apply!
More details below; find the application here.

Last Chance for $500 [SURE Award]
Did you know that Honors students have the exclusive opportunity to win up to $500 for their research? It’s true! Apply to the UHP/Sigelman Undergraduate Research Enhancement Award (SURE) and we might just cut you a check.
We know “Undergraduate Research Enhancement” doesn’t sound that exciting (well, to most people at least, but you areUHPers), but what you can actually do with that money is amazing. Some of last year’s winners used the funds to create anearly warning device to detect seizures, fund focus groups to learn how television affects political beliefs, and to question the foundations of Hollywood.
The possibilities are endless, but the deadline to apply for funds in the 2014 is Friday, September 27th, 2013.

UHP Peer Advising Is Awesome [GW Hatchet]
If you’re a UHPer, you probably already know that UHP students have a great resource: the Student Peer Advisors (SPA). Thanks to an article in today’s Hatchet, everybody else knows too! Sunik Kim extols the virtues of a close-knit community and peer advising — just like what we have in the UHP with SPA.
Pretty awesome. SPAwesome.
From the Hatchet article:
Peer advising would not only help students from an academic standpoint, but new students could also benefit socially from older students who know more about campus life. As mentors to underclassmen, the older students in the honors program advising system hold get-togethers two to three times each month, where students can socialize.

Prof. Miller and Rio Hart Present UHP Course at Conference
Most students spend their time taking classes, having fun and participating in extracurriculars. It takes a certain type of young adult to spend their free time researching algae as a source of biofuel. But that’s just what junior Rio Hart did during his freshman year–and beyond.
When the University Honors Program freshmen entered Professor Houston Miller’s science classroom on the first day, they were in for a surprise. Rather than the usual introduction or high school review, students were thrown into a business scenario. They pitched their idea to an investor (in this case, Professor Miller) and then began troubleshooting their plans. Continue reading “Prof. Miller and Rio Hart Present UHP Course at Conference”
