Ice Skating in Georgetown [SPA Event]

Winter is coming. You might be quaking in your boots, scared of hats, mittens, gloves, and frostbite. But never fear, your SPA are here to help you make the best out of winter. Think of all the good things winter brings: snow, hot chocolate, and ice skating.

Yeah, I just said ICE SKATING! A brand new ice skating rink is opening up in Georgetown so come help us ring in winter in style on NOVEMBER 30th. We will meet in the Ivory Basement near Dunkin Donuts at 6:00. It is only $9 to skate and we are going to get dinner after too because it doesn’t get better than ice skating and food. Brian, Siddhi and Rachel hope to see you there!

Free Concert at the Kennedy Center [SPA Event]

Interested in free music with an interesting international mix?  Join SPA sophomores Kevin Frey and Rebekah Johnson on their grassroots outing to see a free performance by Toubab Krewe at the Kennedy Center on Friday, Oct. 12.
This North Carolina based folk band fuses the music of Mali with American musical styles to create what is truly a unique blend of sound.  Aside from electric guitar and bass, this small ensemble features exotic instruments such as the kora, soku, and African Drums.
Sound interesting?  Kevin and Rebekah will be meeting outside of Funger Hall at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and will walk over to the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage.  Afterward, join them for half-price fro-yo at Campus Fresh!

Choose Your Own Adventure: The 4-Year Plan

You’re the Star! 879 Thrilling Endings! Will you double major in Political Science and Spanish? Or will you study abroad for a year and minor in Jazz Studies? As you navigate through GW’s course selection and options for majors and minors, remember that your 4-year plan is entirely dependent on what you want. Which direction will you choose? Whether you want to graduate in three years, study abroad twice, take on five different minors or give the premed requirements a shot, turn to none other than your SPA.
In addition to completing a 4-year plan (or two, or three…) already, Student Peer Advisors have experience crafting their 4-year plans into living documents that detail their academic goals. If you need any help organizing or brainstorming for your own plan, don’t hesitate to contact the SPA paired with your Origins class or email the SPA account at uhpspa@gwu.edu.
In the meantime, check out this example from UHPer Jenny Hamilton. If excel isn’t your style, try color-coding. UHPers love color-coding. If all else fails, show up to your 4-year plan advising appointment with an interpretive dance. I’m sure Liz would love that.

Shh! We're in the Library [SPA Event]

Not Gelman, we promise! One of the most amazing, inspiring, architecturally stunning, and well air-conditioned places in the District is the Library of Congress (LoC). Join SPA Thomas Josephson this Saturday as he heads to the LoC to get a library card! If you want one too, meet at the Foggy Bottom metro stop at 11 am to head on over. Fun fact, the Library of Congress records and preserves every single public Tweet!

SPA in Action at the HAW

UHP Freshman at last Monday’s HAW with some of our SPA

Happy second week of classes from your Student Peer Advisors (SPA)! We hope that your classes are fascinating, your stomachs are full of free food, and most importantly – that you’ve taken our advice and dropped that Calc II class you don’t actually need.
We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet the UHP freshman and our fall Origins classes at last Monday’s HAW. When prompted with free food, we provide a plethora of GW wisdom including information and personal experience on study abroad, undergraduate research, community service, and more!  Jokes, we’ll actually share all of these things without food, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.
Should you need any help or guidance throughout your first few weeks of class, please do not hesitate to reach out to us! Contact the SPA paired with your Origins class, come to our SPA Office Hours in the UHP Townhouse on Wednesdays from 5-7pm, or email the SPA account at uhpspa@gwu.edu and have our leadership team find a Student Peer Advisor with the knowledge you need!  We look forward to seeing you and the rest of our UHP brethren soon.

Oh, and in case you forgot: bowties are cool!
