SPA Office Hours to help with your 4-year plan!

4yearplanBefore freshmen meet with Catherine for an initial four-year plan appointment, make sure to meet with a Student Peer Advisor first!
Luckily for everyone, the SPA are holding office hours in the Foggy Bottom Townhouse according to the below schedule!
Pick a time and go!  We’ve tried to include some helpful information so that you can get the most out of it, but don’t worry if the person you’re meeting with doesn’t exactly match your school/interest.  They’ll be able to help either way!
And if none of these work, you can always email uhpspa@gwu.edu to meet up at a different time.

#HonorsProblems-Going Home for the Summer

Today’s #HonorsProblems post is written by Kayleigh Ryherd, a senior and SPA majoring in psychology!
Summer plans got you down? Dreading returning to a dinky hometown with fewer traffic lights than Dunkins’? I, Kayleigh Ryherd, SPA Extraordinaire, have the blog post for you! However, everyone has different goals for the summer, so I’ll try to cover a few of them.
GOAL 1: I want to make a lot of money. As a college student who can only hold full-time employment for the short summer months, you may feel discouraged when applying for jobs. Lucky for you, though, with the warming weather comes a multitude of seasonal jobs. Apply for something outside – through the local Parks Department (bonus: pretend you know Leslie Knope) or at a summer camp. Often, jobs like that do a lot of cross-training, so if someone from a different but related department calls in sick, you might be able to pick up their hours.

GOAL 2: I want to do something in my major.
Email a professor. Really. I’m serious. Just because you don’t see any job listings for openings in a lab doesn’t mean that there aren’t any, especially if you’re willing to work as a volunteer. The summer after my sophomore year, I picked a random professor whose research interested me off of the UIUC website and asked to work in her lab, and it worked! And you can do this by reaching out to any professor who’s research interests you, in any field. This can help you get preliminary experience for when you are aiming for goal 3…

GOAL 3: I want to make a lot of money AND do something in my major.
Apply for an NSF REU. These programs stick you with a mentor who does research that interests you while helping you out significantly financially, across all sorts of fields of study. My REU paid for travel, room and board, GRE prep materials, and three course credits in addition to a sizable stipend. This is all because they want to invest in the promising undergraduate students – and who better than UHPers?
amen
In short, there are always way more summer opportunities than there seem to be; a lot of the time all it takes is just to ask for them.

Sit n' Knit This Wednesday! [Grassroots Event]

Two of your lovely SPA, Penina and Kate, are hosting a Sit ‘n’ Knit (and Crochet) this Wednesday, 3/19 from 6:30-8 in the Club Room. Bring whatever project you’re working on, or Kate will have extra materials to teach people how to crochet. If you aren’t into fiber crafts, there will be coloring pages and markers as well. Feel free to drop in for a relaxing break from studying, or stay for awhile to gossip about the latest midterm drama. All Honors students are welcome!

SPA Advising Events This Wednesday!

The UHP and your SPA have two advising events this Wednesday at the Foggy Bottom Club Room:
FOR JUNIORS: Senior Requirements Workshop at 2PM. Confused about what you need to do to senior year to fulfill UHP graduation requirements? Come talk with Catherine and some of your senior SPA who are in the process of completing those requirements right now! Get a head start on thinking about what you’ll need to do your senior year and make sure you know what the requirements are so the lead up to graduation goes as smoothly as possible!
FOR UNDERCLASSMEN: UHP requirements beyond freshmen year workshop, at 6:30PM. Freshmen and sophomores don’t need to really start worrying about senior graduation requirements just yet, but between now and the end of senior year you’ve got other UHP requirements to fulfill. Your SPA will walk you through what those requirements are so you can make sure you’re on the right path to get all of your UHP requirements done by graduation!
We know thinking about this stuff can be stressful, but trust us: it’s going to be okay.

From Madrid With Love [Study Ablog]

Today’s Study Ablog post is written by junior and UHPer Kimya Forouzan, and ESIA student studying abroad in Madrid!
Hello my lovely Honors Program members! Where am I writing to you from? Madrid, of course. The actual city that never sleeps. It’s 2:00 AM, and I’m just finishing up my homework for midterms week, astonished that I am still functioning despite never sleeping. Getting used to the schedule in Madrid was the hardest part of adjusting to the new city. I eat dinner with my host family most nights around 10:00 PM, and often don’t meet friends on weekends until 12:00 or 2:00 AM.

Me and my arch nemesis
Me and my arch nemesis

My time in Madrid has flown by so far, although that’s not to say it didn’t begin with some bumps in the road—because it did. I still remember the first day I met my host mom. She forgot to give me a key, which convinced me that she already hated me and just didn’t want me to come back home ever.
Once the first three days of orientation passed, I was tasked with having to navigate through the city using Spanish. At first, it was so hard to just say words. I was so afraid of being completely wrong and embarrassing myself that I hid behind a few phrases that I repeated. I was late to almost every single class I had because of my long commute, and I almost fell off a donkey.
But eventually, I learned that my host mom actually loves me, started getting comfortable with the language, got the hang of the city, and vowed to never be within a 100-mile radius of a donkey ever again. Despite all of these bumps that I had in the beginning, I have come to realize that studying abroad is the most valuable thing I’ve done while at GW, and I already cannot wait until my next travel experience.

[Insert Here]: Improv Comedy (and sometimes pineapples) [Student Org Profile]

Welcome to a new column where UHPers can shine the spotlight on orgs they’re involved in at GW right here on the UHP blog! Want to get the word out about your org and tell the rest of the UHP why it’s awesome? Want to encourage others to get involved in your org? Email uhpspa@gwu.edu about writing a post!
Hello lovely UHP members! My name is Kayleigh Ryherd, and I am here to write to you about my improv group – [insert here]. Yes, that is actually our name. Yes, it does have a tendency to confuse people who work in offices. We are one of two fabulous improv comedy groups at GW (the other being receSs, which is equally fabulous and features UHP senior and staffer Eleanor Klibanoff). For those who haven’t seen a lot of improv, it involves a group of people creating scenes on a stage from a suggestion provided by the audience. (Think Whose Line is it Anyway?)stanley-lol

In [insert here], we focus on both longform and shortform improv. Longform can be described as an improvised play. The performers get a suggestion from the audience and then create characters, locations, and situations on the spot. They then follow those characters through a story arc. Shortform is more like what they do on Whose Line – short, game-like improvised scenes with a predetermined premise or twist. (If you haven’t yet, check out Sideways Scene – it’s new with the return of Whose Line and it is hilarious!)

I have been with [insert here] since its start in the Spring of 2011. We had our first show in the now-nonexistent Mitchell Theater (accompanied by the delicious scent of 7-Eleven). Since then all of us have been working hard to establish a presence on campus and commit ourselves to producing high-quality comedy. However, I find the most important aspect of improv to be how much fun it is! Twice a  week I get to get together with some of my favorite people and watch them be absolutely hilarious or play a character I didn’t even know I could. I started improv in high school, and I love that I am able to continue doing something so fun all through college. brick-lol

If any of this sounds interesting to you, we encourage you to come to one of our shows and maybe even audition next fall! Most of the comedy stars you know actually got their start in improv: Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Will Ferrell, Seth Meyers, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, Chris Farley – and that’s just some of them.
Tonight also happens to be a magical night for improv. Our first show of the year happens tonight (October 25) in the Marvin Amphitheater at 8pm, and afterwards receSs is having their newbie show at 10pm in the Continental Ballroom. Both shows cost $3, and they are sure to have you laughing all night long!insert here

Embassy Trick-or-Treating! [SPA Grassroots Event]

There’s a chill in the air, and you know what that means… Halloween. Can you think of a better way to spend it than trick or treating at the embassies with all your honors friends? We thought not.

On Thursday, October 31st (umm, Halloween), your SPA Laura and Michelle will lead a trip to Embassy Row to get as much multicultural candy as possible. They’ll be meeting outside of Funger Hall at 12:30pm, trick-or-treating for a couple of hours, and then walking back. Come dressed as something other than yourself and bring a vessel for transporting goodies. (Start composing your #onlyatGW tweets and Instagram captions now.)
RSVP to the Facebook event here!

SPA is Here to Help!

We’ve assembled a crack team of Student Peer Advisors here to answer your every question and assuage your every fear. They’re hanging out in the Foggy Bottom townhouse all this week and next in order to help you get through registration unscathed.
If you’ve got questions, they’ve got answers. Should you take math? Should you take an extra math for fun? Should you major in math? Should you write a thesis in mathing? (They can even answer non-math related questions!!)
Overwhelmed by options? Underwhelmed by how far your GWorld money is going? Want to go abroad? Want to stay here forever? Us too. And SPA will be here, as long as you need them, until they have class or another obligation or something. Here’s the actual schedule if you’re not much for gambling.
Come and hang out…nothing sadder than a SPAcialist with no one to SPAssist.

Remember: You is smart. You is kind. You are welcome at the Townhouse for free advising. See you soon!
