Alex Yudelson at the DNC

Two UHP students went to the DNC as delegates earlier this month.  Alex Yudelson checked in with us to tell us about his amazing opportunity.

In February I got a phone call informing me that I was chosen as a delegate for Barack Obama to the Democratic National Convention, representing the 29th Congressional District in Upstate NY.
Fast forward seven months and I found myself casting my ballot to nominate President Obama for another term as president of the United States.  Continue reading “Alex Yudelson at the DNC”

Shh! We're in the Library [SPA Event]

Not Gelman, we promise! One of the most amazing, inspiring, architecturally stunning, and well air-conditioned places in the District is the Library of Congress (LoC). Join SPA Thomas Josephson this Saturday as he heads to the LoC to get a library card! If you want one too, meet at the Foggy Bottom metro stop at 11 am to head on over. Fun fact, the Library of Congress records and preserves every single public Tweet!

The Vern: Student Friendly Space

The GW Hatchet weighed in on ways to make the Vern a more student friendly place.  What do you think?
From the article:

If the University wants to encourage more students to take advantage of the Vern, it could emphasize the versatility of its dual-campus model and work to make it attractive, not just for prospective students and freshmen, but for upperclassmen as well.

That editorial goes on to list specific suggestions, like increased dining options and senior dean’s seminars.  It also noted that the recent rebranding effort, which seems to emphasize the Foggy Bottom location, missed out on the opportunity to advance the many benefits of a dual campus model.
The UHP, of course, has offices in both Foggy Bottom and Mt. Vernon, as well as an official living community in West Hall where about 50% of our freshmen choose to live.  We’re making good use of the dual-campus model, and we know there are already many benefits to living and taking classes at MVC.  To name a few:  students who live on the campus get priority registration for any class held on MVC; classes tend to be smaller thanks to there being few massive lecture halls; and the rooms in West (many of which allow you a  private bedroom) are cheaper than the majority of all other upper-classmen residence halls.
What do you think?  Is there more that GW (or even just the UHP) could do to help make the Vern a more student friendly place?  Or do you reject the question out of hand, and say that the Vern already is student friendly?

SPA in Action at the HAW

UHP Freshman at last Monday’s HAW with some of our SPA

Happy second week of classes from your Student Peer Advisors (SPA)! We hope that your classes are fascinating, your stomachs are full of free food, and most importantly – that you’ve taken our advice and dropped that Calc II class you don’t actually need.
We thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet the UHP freshman and our fall Origins classes at last Monday’s HAW. When prompted with free food, we provide a plethora of GW wisdom including information and personal experience on study abroad, undergraduate research, community service, and more!  Jokes, we’ll actually share all of these things without food, but it certainly doesn’t hurt.
Should you need any help or guidance throughout your first few weeks of class, please do not hesitate to reach out to us! Contact the SPA paired with your Origins class, come to our SPA Office Hours in the UHP Townhouse on Wednesdays from 5-7pm, or email the SPA account at uhpspa@gwu.edu and have our leadership team find a Student Peer Advisor with the knowledge you need!  We look forward to seeing you and the rest of our UHP brethren soon.

Oh, and in case you forgot: bowties are cool!

Appointments: Now in Two Delicious Flavors!

This year we’re skipping the traditional walk-in hours for the first two weeks of the semester, and instead using a new option for appointments!
Starting right this very moment, you have the option of booking a 15 minute OR a 30 minute appointment with either Liz or Catherine!
Please note that 15 minutes is the default booking time, so if you want a 30 minute appointment, you have to select it! (You’ll see the dropdown menu for it after you select your start time.)
If you’re still looking for drop-ins, come to express advising hours, every Wednesday from 5-7pm in Foggy Bottom to see Liz and some SPA!
Head over and make your appointment now!
Remember, always take note of where you made your appointment!  You don’t want to show up at the Mt. Vernon Campus if Liz or Catherine is waiting for you in Foggy Bottom!
