We Love RSS.

…and no, it’s not just because we’re geeks.  It’s because (as the name Really Simple Syndication implies) it’s, well, really simple.

Step 1: Copy this link (or memorize and retype it, we don’t really care… although, typos are on you then): http://theuhp.wordpress.com/feed/
Step 2: Go to www.google.com/reader (or a feed reader of your choice).
Step 3: Click subscribe, and input the link from step 1 into the box that pops up (or similar processes with other feed readers).
Step 4: Enjoy getting UHP news delivered to your virtual doorstep.
Wasn’t that easy? Enjoy!

What It's Like To Live In West Hall [Honors Housing]

The following post is written by UHP freshman, SPA member, and West Hall resident Dan Grover. —-
One of the biggest challenges about the college process isn’t the applications, it isn’t the essays, or even getting in. It’s figuring out where to go. Hopefully, by reading this, you’ve already settled on GW, (but just in case you haven’t, totally come to GW). Once I’d finally made that choice and let some relief settle in, I was confronted by an even tougher decision: do I choose to live in Honors Housing?
I’m sure I had some of the same fears that you prospective students are having now; will all of my friends be only Honors kids, will I make no friends outside of West Hall, will I be sad all the time on the Vern and so on. After much agonizing, I bit the bullet and went through with Honors Housing.
I don’t regret it for a moment. Continue reading “What It's Like To Live In West Hall [Honors Housing]”

Enter UMD Humanities Research Symposium

If you’ve got an excellent research paper in the humanities, submit to UMD’s “Humans 2.0.”  Presenting at a conference is a nice thing to have on your résumé, and a great way to explore other research in interesting (and sometimes overlapping) topics.  Plus, with the event being so close, it’s easy to make!
Click through for the complete call for proposals for the University of Maryland Honors Humanities Program’s  Sixth Annual Undergraduate Research Symposium, taking place on Friday, May 3rd.

Attention ESIA Rising Juniors and Seniors!

Have you considered applying for the Elliott School Undergraduate Scholars Program?
This year, Preston Whitt and Carly Nuttal (two UHP seniors, see this blog post) participated and highly recommend the experience. They honed their research skills and received a $500 stipend to investigate questions of pressing interest to themselves and to their fields, and the Elliott School will publish their final products as an academic journal.  In addition, they presented their findings to local academic conference, satisfied their UHP Special Honors requirements, and made lasting professional and mentor relationships with their faculty advisors.
If you are thinking about applying, stop by the UHP Townhouse this Thursday (4/4/13) evening from 7:00-9:00 pm.  Preston will be on hand to answer any questions about the program or look over your proposal to offer advice.
RSVP not required, but definitely appreciated!

Coffee and Doughnuts for Privileged Students

On Wednesday, April 3rd privileged registration will open to Honors students.  The wonderful house proctors of West HallMeagan and Val will be distributing coffee and breakfast for you sleepy-eyed students starting at 6:30 AM.  The fact that they are getting up before 7 AM proves that they care.  You can find them outside the elevators on the first floor of West Hall that morning.

Mexican Drug Cartels and Impotent Peruvian Presidents: ESIA Honors Seniors Present Their Research

On April 10, UHP Seniors Carly Nuttal and J. Preston Whitt will be presenting their research at the Elliott School Undergraduate Scholars conference.  Carly’s paper (Transnational Organized Crime and the Threat to Democratic Governability: A Case Study of Los Zetas, the “Newest” Obstacle to Hemispheric Security) investigated the threat to the State from drug cartels like Los Zetas in Mexico, and Preston (Humala’s Peruvian Impotence: Forced Equilibrism in Latin American Political Economy) proposed a new research agenda on shrinking policymaker agency, using Peru as a case study!

This is their story.
This is their story.

The UHP has it on the highest authorities that there WILL be cookies available in addition to the life-affirming, intellectually-enriching, dangerously-stimulating presentations.
See the official invitation with an agenda and full list of presenters here.  Even though Preston’s eyes are closed and Carly was sick, they aren’t bitter at all about such a terrible picture being used.
RESEARCH!
