The topic: Explaining Enmity
One of the most important and consequential states of mind – has received little direct theoretical study. Why is that? In this presentation, I define what I mean by enmity, discuss how I came to explore the subject, offer methods to enable us to manage the complexity of its exploration, and present a particular case as an example. The example I develop is King Philip’s War – a world-changing clash between Indians and the Puritan Colonists in later 17th century New England – which has been called one of the deadliest in American history. It left a profound mark on America’s tradition of conflict.
