The NASH-GWU DMV Regional Community of Practice on Refugee Students in Higher Education

The Refugee Educational Advancement Lab (REAL) and the National Association of Higher Education Systems (NASH) are pleased to announce the creation of the NASH-GWU DMV Regional Community of Practice on Refugee Students in Higher Education,  a project that will bring together faculty, staff, and students of institutions in the Consortium of Universities in the Washington Metropolitan Area (“the Consortium”) for a series of seminars to:

1) discuss challenges facing refugee and forcibly displaced students in higher education;

2) identify programs and best practices for supporting refugee and forcibly displaced students; and

3) establish a continued Communities of Practice for collaboration across campuses in the Consortium to further programs and best practices supporting refugee and forcibly displaced students.

The NASH-GW DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) Regional Convening on Refugee Students in Higher Education will be held on November 18th, 2024 at The George Washington University. Sessions for the first convening, we will lead working session focused on:

  • Local Research in the DMV
  • The Role of Institutional Departments in Refugee Student Support
  • Student Leadership
  • Welcome Corps on Campus Connections
  • Refugee Community Support Session
    • *closed session for refugee community members to share experiences and give ideas and suggestions for the Communities of Practice.*
