The REAL lab has two main goals: first, facilitate the involvement of George Washington University student scholar-practitioners to learn, research, publish, and become trained to support refugees and at-risk migrants. Students in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD), Elliott School of International Affairs (ESIA), and the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) are involved. Second, it seeks to bring attention to a broad range of issues through joint research and advocacy projects aimed at empowering refugee and at-risk migrant communities in the Washington, DC-Maryland- Virginia area, throughout the U.S., and in crisis areas of North, Central and South America; Europe; parts of Asia; Oceania; and throughout Africa. The lab covers all areas of education, from primary, through secondary, into higher, and life-long learning.

Through our short- and long-term research projects and ongoing review of current scholarship, we serve as a touchpoint for stakeholders, research and advocacy organizations, and policymakers, and work in partnership with the University Alliance for Refugees and at-Risk Migrants (UARRM), the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration (PAHEI), and the World University Service of Canada (WUSC), among others. We have just signed a contract for our first book, Accessing Quality Education for Refugees: Local and Global Perspectives, with Rowman & Littlefield.
