Leadership and Education

What are the characteristics of effective leaders? What roles do leaders play in organizations? These are questions that students will explore in this course in addition to examining leadership theories, characteristics, traits, and types. Students will reflect on their own leadership potential as educational technology leaders as they analyze theories and practices associated with leadership, adult development, change, and team collaboration.

Objectives: In this course, students will:

  • Examine several different theories, characteristics, traits, and types of leadership;
  • Apply theories of leadership to real world scenarios;
  • Develop a leadership framework (Irby & Brown, 2000);
  • Explore how leadership and a leader’s behavior can influence change in various settings;
  • Identify strategies for leading virtual, in-person, and hybrid teams and organizations; and
  • Assess their own development, practices, and potential as leaders.
