Producing the Middle East: New Directions in Regional Media and Politics
Thursday, March 25 & Friday, March 26, 2021
Because of the virtual format of the conference, all panels will consist of discussion of the panelists' work. To view the their full presentations please visit our Online Exhibition below. All times below are EST.
The media landscape of the Middle East is changing rapidly. Turkish entertainment series are globalizing visions of the region. Netflix started a project of making Arabic originals, charting a new path towards localization. Displaced populations from wars in Iraq, Yemen and Syria are creating new digital diasporas, formations of nostalgia, witnessing, and fracture. This conference foregrounds media to explain how the Middle East is being produced or reproduced as a region of lived experience and meaning. It brings together scholars who each possess expertise in media and the Middle East but from a range of theoretical and methodological approaches and disciplinary backgrounds.
