Teaching Arabic Language & Culture through Food with Mariya Chakir

Monday, September 20, 2021 12:00-1:30pm EDT

In this workshop, Professor Chakir will explore how we can teach Arabic language and culture through food, with an emphasis on food's many qualities, including sharing, celebration, love, and nutrition. Chakir will share classroom activities to develop students’ skills and to increase their global and cultural awareness. The activities will incorporate the interpretive, the interpersonal, and the presentational modes and make use of recipes, songs, poems, proverbs, and articles about food. The learning goals include vocabulary and grammar as well as the sociocultural and political aspects of the target culture.

This program is supported by funding from the Qatar Foundation.

Mariya Chakir is originally from Morocco. She graduated from Ohio University in 2010 with a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics. She teaches Arabic & French at Valdosta State University in Georgia. She enjoys cooking, baking, and traveling.
