The Scoop- Going Out Guide

Welcome to the first edition of The Scoop! A guide for all you’ll need to know about life as a Colonial! Today we’re talking about your social life! When you’re not spending time in class or at the library, you should plan to take advantage of all of the wonderful cultural attractions that DC has to offer.

Wine & Dine: Washington has a bustling restaurant scene with restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world. Whether you are in search of Ethiopian cuisine, a great burger, or craft cocktails, there’s always a new venue to try. See the Washingtonian Magazine’s Guide to the 100 Best Restaurants in the City for fine dining or their guide to Cheap Eats in DC for something more casual.

Museums & Arts:  Stop by any of the 19 museums and galleries or the National Zoo in the Smithsonian Institution for free, see priceless works of art from across the centuries in the National Gallery of Art, or visit some of the smaller museums in the city like the Phillips Collection or the Newseum. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is the home of the National Symphony Orchesta, the Washington National Opera, and the Suzanne Farrell Ballet, and frequently hosts Broadway-caliber musicals and plays.  The 9:30 Club and the Black Cat are longstanding and beloved concert venues within the city.

Sports:  You can catch the GW Colonials in action in a variety of sports around campus and around the city.  In terms of professional sports, you can catch one of our local teams in any major sport in the U.S.  If you’d rather get in on the action yourself, local leagues like DC CityBall are a great place to look.

Outdoors:  If you’d like to get some sunshine, head out on the Billy Goat trail for hiking, visit the National Arboretum, or go kayaking on the Potomac River. In the winter, you can ice skate in the Sculpture Garden at the National Gallery of Art.

Explore DC: Washington is full of distinct and historical neighborhoods. Check out the city’s guide to the neighborhoods around the District, and hop on the Metro or the bus to see somewhere new. Finally, the Washington Post’s Going Out Guide is regarded by locals as a foolproof  guide to finding something new to do!
