The initiatives in Culinary Medicine involve coordination of research at academic medical centers currently offering programming.


Maya Fiellin, MPH   Research Lead, Culinary Medicine Maya Fiellin is a Public Health Researcher and Educator, based in Washington, DC. Her areas of focus include nutrition, health education & promotion and operations management. As a hands-on senior leader, her background combines 10+ years in public health, community outreach as well as hospitality management.

Additionally, Maya is fluent in Spanish and has spent time in translation and interpretation. Working in a variety of settings from start-up environments to well established programs, Maya is a self-directed leader and an advocate for her team and community.

  • Identifies and maintains relationships with clinical and community partners for coordinating research projects
  • Assists investigators with ongoing research projects and acts as a liaison between subjects and investigators
  • Monitors clinical outcomes, compliance and progress for the lifetime of each research project in accordance with federal standards.
  • Coordinates patient management and class scheduling with clinics community partners and Culinary Medicine instructors; Maintains close contact and coordination with offsite clinics and hospitals.
  • Oversees scheduling for research project timelines, individual study participants and associated subject visits.
  • Supervises database management, tracking and entering patient data as relevant to grant and research initiatives.
  • Coordinates and guides student researchers and interns during the recruiting, collection, and publishing phases of research projects.
  • Facilitates survey collection for research initiatives before and during cooking classes for community, medical professionals and medical students.
  • Oversees study IRB compliance: protocols, documentation and reporting.
  • Identifies study-appropriate candidates through recruiting efforts, as assigned
