Teaching Resources for Community Engaged Scholarship Courses: Spring 2021

Please review the following resources provided to support instructors of Spring 2021 community engaged scholarship courses.

Nashman Website Resources
The Nashman Website link above includes the following resources, all updated for the unique considersations of this academic year.

  • The Nashman Center's Public Box Folder on Teaching Resources
  • Faculty Guide to Writing the Community Engaged Course Syllabus
  • Risk and Liability Waivers (note - these are largely unnecessary this year with students not serving on-site)

The Nashman Faculty Update Blog Resources
We use our blog to keep you connected to new resources released by academic and professional associations and journals, including the many webinars and toolkits that were released this year. There are a wealth of resources to help with considerations related to physical distancing, addressing anti-racism in the community engaged classroom, and connecting student service to political engagement.

We recommend sorting the blog posts by the "Course Support" category (using the drop-down menu).

Resources for Teaching Community Engaged Scholarship Courses: A Shared Document
Through the summer and fall, we have had on-going conversations, panels, and workshops to support faculty as they adjust their courses and student service projects. The accumulated resources are available at the link above, and includes these categories:

  • Links to Recordings of Nashman Center Panels and Workshops (2020)
  • Facilitating Reflective Discussion in Online Courses
  • Resources on Anti-Racism
  • Resources on Supporting Collaborative Work in the Virtual Environment
  • Working Community Partners

Faculty Check-ins: Fridays, noon-1pm, https://gwu.webex.com/meet/wagnerw
This fall semester, instructors of community engaged scholarship courses requested a weekly check-in meeting, which we held on Fridays at noon. These have been helpful spaces for sharing this moment with like-minded colleagues, as well as sharing tips and resources. We will continue these through January to help spring semester instructors get a strong start.

Givepulse and Nashman Course Guides
All community engaged scholarship courses have a "course page" provided on Givepulse, which is already populated with your students and the community partners affiliated with your course. Students report their service activities here, where instructors can monitor progress throughout the semester.

We will provide a workshop for faculty on navigating Givepulse to maximize its many features, January 7th,10-11am, https://gwu.webex.com/meet/wagnerw.

In addition to course pages, Givepulse also has a subgroup page for faculty who teach community engaged scholarship courses. This page helps us connect to each other, facilitates event registrations, and is what I use to share resources and updates throughout the semester.

All community engaged scholarship courses are assigned a Nashman Center Course Guide, an undergraduate student who your students may contact for support with arranging and reporting their service activities. You will be notified of your Course Guide in early January. All Course Guides monitor student reports in GWServes and will communicate with your students behind the scenes if they need help entering their service correctly.

Community Partners for Spring Semester Service Projects

Please note that for Spring of 2021, it is the Nashman Center's guidance that students NOT be engaged in in-person/on-site service. The Nashman Center staff have worked hard this year to communicate with our community partners to identify MANY virtual and indirect service opportunities for students. We're happy to connect you to them and help you review the project options to find the best fit for your course.

If you have not already communicated with us about the community partners you will work with this spring, please watch for a follow-up to this message with an urgent request. Given the short time-frame before spring courses begin, we need to confirm your community partners and affiliate them on your Givepulse course page as soon as possible.
