Helping DCPS Students Navigate Through High School

This presentation covers my service with the non-profit organization, College Next Door, and the work I completed to help a DCPS student navigate high school and the college application process. It gave me a look into what the DCPS system is like for a student and the setbacks that student might face. Symposium Theme: Building authentic relationships in this unique time.

This project was part of Abbie Weiner’s course, COMM 1041: Interpersonal Communication. Students in this course learn the theories and principles of interpersonal communication while engaging in service-learning with local after-school programs, job training programs, and other service organizations.

    I did a similar program when I was in my undergrad degree and I remember how meaningful it was for me to be able to help my student throughout the years of her schooling. Programs like these often provide students with a mentor to help them explore possibilities that they might not have known were possible. Love love LOVE these programs, especially in the wake of COVID where additional support is needed for most students now.

      Yes exactly! Thank you so much for your comment! Switching the mentorship to an online platform this year has definitely been difficult but CND has made so many accommodations for the DCPS students and even for us GW students as mentors which has made it a lot easier.
