Get ready for an inspiring and thought-provoking experience at the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) 2024 annual conference, Beyond Boundaries . Taking place from October 20-22 in Minneapolis–Saint Paul, MN, this event promises to challenge higher education leaders to look beyond what seems possible in today's academic landscape.
This year's conference features two exceptional plenary speakers who will address crucial topics in higher education and social justice:
Monday, October 21: The Art of Science
Dr. Eric J. Jolly, President and CEO of the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation, will present "The Art of Science." In this unique session, Dr. Jolly will weave a traditional Cherokee-style doubled walled basket while sharing stories of his heritage, culture, and scientific learning. This presentation aims to highlight different ways of knowing and demonstrating scientific learning through metaphor and storytelling.
Tuesday, October 22: Break the Wheel: On Social Justice and Police Reform
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison will deliver a powerful plenary titled "Break the Wheel: On Social Justice and Police Reform." Focusing on the Derek Chauvin trial following the murder of George Floyd, Ellison will provide a raw and unfiltered account of the legal battle for justice. His remarks will offer a stark examination of the complexities and challenges faced by prosecutors in confronting police violence and systemic injustice. The session will conclude with a facilitated conversation led by Lori Sturdevant, retired editorial writer and columnist from The Minnesota Star Tribune.
