The University of Washington in Seattle is hosting an Institute on Teaching Social Action on September 7-8, 2024. This event will serve as a pre-conference to the National Sustainability Society Conference and will be led by Dr. Scott Myers-Lipton, Director of Teaching Social Action, and Dr. Arun Agrawa, professor at the University of Michigan's School for Environment and Sustainability.
Interested GW faculty and staff can apply to attend the Institute here. The Institute is free, but attendees must pay a $60 fee to the National Sustainability Society Conference for the use of the room on campus.
The Institute runs from 8:45 am to 6:15 pm on Saturday, September 7th, and from 8:45 am to 1 pm on Sunday, September 8th. It aims to train faculty and staff to develop social action syllabi for courses or workshop series that engage students in leading "policy change" campaigns.
Dr. Arun Agrawa says of the Institute: "I have personally gone through the Institute and found it incredibly helpful in developing a social action course, that I then taught at the University of Michigan the following semester. Teaching social action has been one of the highlights of my career, as it provides students with concrete tools with which to organize social action campaigns and actions for undertaking social action for change. I highly recommend it! It really is a fantastic, generative opportunity."
