By Tyler Cholankeril, for the Fall 2020 Symposium on Community Engaged Scholarship.
My presentation was about the mission of the Latino Student Fund and what my role was as a mentor for this organization. Symposium Theme: Building authentic relationships in this unique time.
This project was part of Abbie Weiner’s course, COMM 1041: Interpersonal Communication. Great job, Tyler! I am the Program Manager for engageDC at GW, which partners with the Latino Student Fund as one of our 9 partners with engageDC. I loved how you focused on the importance of creating reciprocal mentor-mentee relationships. It's crucial that you not only present yourself authentically to students to further build trust but also that you listen to their ideas, receive their feedback, and recognize your own areas of knowledge and areas for further learning. It seems like you learned that and did that well, and I am sure your student mentee appreciated that. If you are interested in continuing serving and make an impact in the Spring, consider joining engageDC and other GW students who've continued working with LSF beyond the classroom. We have both FWS and non-FWS positions we are hiring for in the Spring. Check out more at http://gwserves.givepulse.com/survey/take/q2Fq29QDdzyuZLQGvrBO
