The National Science Foundation (NSF), National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) provides policy makers and the public high-quality information on the science and engineering enterprise.

This internship is for participants in a wide variety of fields including, but not limited to: Business Management, Communications and Graphic Design, Computer Sciences, Economics, Marketing, Mathematics and Statistics, and Survey Methodology.

What will I be doing?

As a Research Ambassador intern, you will have the opportunity to explore a federal career and gain a competitive edge as you apply your education, talent and skills in a variety of settings. You will learn and collaborate on projects that make use of expertise from a variety of fields, including survey methodology, survey statistics, economics and other social science disciplines to design, study, implement and conduct national surveys to measure the science and engineering enterprise.  You will also be engaged in research projects, evaluation initiatives, surveys, data collection and specialized analyses.

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidates. Appointments are typically between May and September.

Where will I be located? Alexandria, VA (Washington D.C. area)

Appointments may result in a virtual placement due to COVID-19 impacts.

What are the benefits?

You will receive a competitive stipend for living and other expenses as determined by NSF. Stipends are typically based on academic standing, discipline, and experience. You may also be eligible to receive a health insurance allowance and reimbursement for travel expenses.

Yleana Leadership Foundation: Student Advocacy Program

The Yleana Leadership Foundation, a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit organization based in New York, seeks motivated college students for its Yleana Student Advocacy Program during the upcoming Spring 2021 semester. The Yleana Leadership Foundation creates exceptional educational experiences for young people of all income levels: preparing our students for success as people and professionals while decreasing the achievement gap. 

About Yleana Leadership Foundation:

  • Yleana Leadership Foundation is committed to closing the achievement gap for underrepresented students from underserved communities. 
  • We have served over 1,000 underrepresented students since 2013.
  • Our college access programs focus on academic and professional mentoring, elite test preparation, entrepreneurship training, college application advising and mentoring, distance learning, and the Yleana Leadership Academy: a free 3 week-long immersion program during the summer held directly on college campuses.
  • All of our programs are completely free for our students and employ culturally competent messaging that is both motivational and trauma-informed.

There are 6 available divisions of the Yleana Student Advocacy Program to join. These internships are remote, unpaid, and have the option to extend (many of our interns choose to stay on for several semesters.) Interns have a high level of freedom and flexibility, so we’re always looking for self-starters who can function well with minimal supervision. This is an excellent program for students looking to gain real experience in various job functions while serving an amazing mission.

Position Details:

  • Team members will be expected to work with us and learn for approximately 10 hours per week; work schedules are flexible and will be determined with the Yleana Student Advocacy Executive Board and your teams.
  • Team members will commit to helping raise funds for the Yleana Leadership Foundation.
  • The position will run from January 19th, 2021, to May 15th, 2021.
  • Team members will work remotely with the use of Zoom, Slack, and Google Suite.

Psychology & Media Internship opportunity

Professor Katherine Marshall Woods is seeking an intern for her Psychology & Media work. Please note that this internship is not available for Honors academic credit.

Description: As a professor with the Professional Psychology Department, I am
engaged in numerous community projects that have interest in the intersection
of psychology and media. In particular, the goal of the work is to 1. assist
individuals to possess a greater awareness of the import and influence media
has upon their thoughts, feelings and perspectives and 2. provide education
to the public regarding mental health. Projects that I currently lead include
the following:

1. Blog Contribution to various blog platforms (Medium, ThriveGlobal, etc.)
Blogs include a psychological analysis of current episodic media as well as
recent film releases

2. Host of the UDCtv television show entitled, “A Healthy Mind”
This television show provides interviews to experts within various fields to
share with the public how a myriad of aspects of one’s life influences
healthy living and lifestyles. Guests provide psychoeducation regarding
their particular topic which has made student participation in this arena
very rewarding.

Lead for America Fellowship in MoCo!

Lead For America

Lead For America works to ensure that our nation’s most dynamic and diverse leaders are working on our communities’ toughest challenges. Our core program is a paid two-year Fellowship for outstanding leaders ages 21-30 to work on the toughest challenges facing local governments and non-profits nationwide, particularly in Fellows’ hometowns and communities struggling to attract and retain talent. From addressing the opioid crisis in Appalachian West Virginia to designing affordable housing policy in East Los Angeles, our Fellows are truly working on most intractable issues facing our country. And because they work alongside the leadership in the community and are doing the work at the local level, it’s really possible to see progress and lives changed.

Our fellowship includes a one-month graduate level summer training led by leaders of the Harvard Kennedy School, Tufts University Tisch College of Civic Life, and the UNC School of Government, three retreats, and alumni opportunities including graduate scholarships and seed funding for initiatives such as starting non-profits or running for office. Our first class of 54 Fellows is currently serving in more than 40 communities in 21 states nationwide.

Montgomery County, MD Fellowship. This Fellow will be a part of the innovation team sparking the evolution of a 9,000 person $2 billion annual operating budget organization by scaling bright spots and adapting tools of service design, user experience, behaviorally informed nudging, community organizing, storytelling and process improvement to public sector justice work. Responsibilities will vary with Fellow skill and passion. The Fellow will support the core Innovation Accelerator community and be deployed for advanced facilitated support working with teams across County government to make rapid improvements, not recommendations.
